Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships:

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The Youth, Education, and Advocacy Unit oversees the education outreach and a series of youth projects for UN Environment at its headquarters in Nairobi. This includes everything from engaging Universities that are part of the Youth and Education Alliance to engaging with partners in the gaming industry and youth movements.

Reporting: The consultant will report to the Chief of the Youth, Education and Advocacy Unit, Sam Barratt.

Tasks and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Chief, Youth, Education & Advocacy Unit, The consultant's duties will include the following work: - Green Game Jam 2024: Capture the learnings of the 2023 Green Game Jam and bring a set of recommendations for how the Jam evolves in 2024 which would include: o Lessons learnt o Theme options o Recommendations for 2024 - Research: With Alliance members, consider what could be included in a research agenda for 2023-4, this would look to: o Build on the research currently undertaken in the Alliance; o Consider the gaps / needs; o Recommend options and an approach going forward. - Web platform: Assess the current web platform and institute a set of recommendations for enhancement of the platform that could be taken forward. - Comms and Community: With Alliance members, assess what are the training needs of members and what courses, talks and materials could be commissioned to support their needs / interests.

Qualifications/special skills Master’s degree in communications, international relations, political science, commerce or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience in the field of decarbonisation / entertainment industry. Entertainment industry: Experience of working in the entertainment and communications sector in the area of gaming for at least 7 years and with insight as to how to work with such entities around the tasks described in the job essential. Project management: Able to deliver highly complex projects of a global nature efficiently and effectively Essential. Innovation: Ability to think creatively about how to evolve pre-existing programmes to have maximum impact essential. Communications: Able to bring a diverse group of individuals and partners together act on a common agenda, web design capability as well as able to write high quality texts and proposals as required is essential. Project design: A strong track record of designing projects that secure buy-in and generate results is desirable. Writing: Strong writer of stories and proposals that support the work is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
