Our Regional Office in Johannesburg, South Africa provides strategic support and technical expertise to colleagues in our 23 Country Offices and our partners who work on the ground to improve people’s lives. We provide policy advice, training, and support.

We focus on impacting the lives of women and young people by empowering them. We seek to ensure that they enjoy universal access to reproductive health and realize their reproductive rights – including in humanitarian crises. We place gender equality and human rights at the heart of this.

This UNV assignment is part of UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Office's (ESARO) programming initiative to capture and bring visibility to UNFPA’s work in the region through quality photography and/or videos which will be used for publications and other communication products, including its digital media platforms. The UNV will assist the organization on missions in capturing its project activities across the region, including countries.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the UNFPA Regional Communications Advisor for East and Southern Africa and in close consultation with Communications Consultants and other relevant units at UNFPA ESARO, the UNV will be required to undertake the following tasks:

Photography - Capture high resolution images of individuals, families, groups and events related to the implementation of the ESARO activities and programmes, at various locations in the ESA region; - Provide a set of no less then 30 selected images from each event/assignment, unless otherwise requested by UNFPA ESARO;
- Provide specific details such as geographical location, name of the person in the photo, time of photo taken, for each photo; - Captions should be embedded in the jpeg images and provided in a separate text document. - The UNV must have good command of own photographic equipment (cameras, lenses lights, filters, tripods), as well as photo-related image editing software. - Service provision will include field trips to UNFPA project sites within the country and communities in which UNFPA is present to capture the situation of children in women in various settings and on occasions specialized conceptual photos. - UNV should be experienced in managing visual assets, tagging and other archiving practices.

Videography - Draft script if needed - Record and produce HD videos (A and B-roll) in English and other languages to document events, activities and interview key, staff/partners/beneficiaries per request of UNFPA to ensure capturing of ESARO’s activities in video format; - Record and edit narration / voice over where needed in according with guidance from UNFPA ESARO Communications Unit; - Export and deliver audio track of videos per request of UNFPA ESARO; - Embed sub-titles video needed; - Edit videos and basic graphic animation as per request of UNFPA ESARO Communications Unit; - Videos shall be produced in a high-quality broadcasting and web publishing format; - Export final version of a video in formats optimized for HD web distribution and TV broadcast and deliver to UNFPA ESARO; - Videos shall be provided in raw format and optimized resolution to UNFPA ESARO on external memory medium or via file transfer service; - Work in close cooperation with and report to the UNFPA ESARO Communications Unit.

Graphic Design - Use digital illustration, photo editing software, and layout software to create designs required for social media and events - Develop theme and corresponding graphics using UNFPA logos and design standards. - Create infographics, icons and text-warmers to enhance content for the talk and Campaign after - Recreate any tables, graphs and charts that will be required by UNFPA - Produce eye-catching and pertinent imagery selected for each of the sections, all with a branded look and feel - Provide animation and interactive background as required - Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

• Excellent oral and written skills; • Excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Sound security awareness; • Have affinity with or interest in sexual reproductive health and rights issues, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Videography, Graphic Design, or other relevant creative desktop publishing programmes at the national and/or international level; experience within the Africa region is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization
• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Desirable: valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain;
• Candidate must be over 35 years of age.

Bigger cities in South Africa can be highly cosmopolitan. In Johannesburg and Pretoria, you will find an abundance of world class gyms, restaurants, bars, recreational classes, galleries, parks etc. The bigger shopping malls host a large selection of international brands. There is a plethora of international cuisine to be sampled, and quirky independent cinemas to be discovered. OR Tambo International Airport is a world class airport, offering highly sophisticated facilities. It is located just outside of Johannesburg, in Kempton Park. It has many international airlines that fly into this airport.

Crime rates in South Africa are ranked on the high end, petty theft and opportunistic crimes are common, and armed robberies, smash & grabs and hijackings are also fairly frequent in certain areas. One needs to remain vigilant especially at night and at road intersections. There are usually sign posts that indicate such hot spots.

Periodic security information updates are sent via email providing information at national level, with regards to circumstances such as incidents of civil unrest, transport security, computer and networking safety and trends in criminality. UNDSS sends weekly security updates via email. Updates from wardens are on an ad hoc basis, following security related events in your residential area. Updates from UNDSS are provided weekly.
