Overview

Provide photographic coverage for UN Mission's activities.

You have:

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Technical or vocational training in photography is required.
• At least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of photography is required.
• Electronic/computer-based editing and design experience are required.
• Additional training/work experience in the field of photography in developing countries and/or post conflict situations is desirable.
• Training/work experience in other fields of multimedia, including videography, and website management is desirable.
• Fluency in oral and written English is required.
• Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Contract

Org. Setting and Reporting These positions are located in the United Nations Field Peacekeeping Operations, Special Political Missions, Service Centres and Offices as applicable. Under the guidance of the Head of Public Information or Head of Multimedia, the incumbent will be responsible for providing photographic coverage and documentation of the Mission's activities. She/he interacts with all sections of the mission, in particular the office of the Head of Mission.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the photographer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Provide photographic coverage and documentation of the Mission’s activities, and liaise with the Military, Police and Civilian units in order to achieve this end.

• Conceive, prepare proposals, write, photograph, edit and assist in the design of specific print/web/digital photographic products for use by the Mission’s Strategic Communications Section as well as other substantive units of the Mission and UN Department of Global Communications (DGC).

• Ensure the highest quality of photographic products.

• Edit, caption and archive photographs with specific data information for storage in the Mission archive and at Mission HQ.

• Provide UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) Photo Library with images, including captions, of the Mission’s activities.

• Work closely with the Mission’s multimedia and publications teams to provide supportive imagery for their platforms and products.

• To undertake any other photography-related assignments, such as editing, research, maintenance and update of Missions’ photo archive and perform digital post-production and photo processing tasks.

• Provide Mission stock images, liaison services, as well as technical support to international and local media organizations. Assist in building capacity in regard to technical proficiency in local media.

• Be responsible for photo equipment, issued by the Mission, for inventory and maintenance purposes.

• Assist in the creation and procurement of equipment infrastructure of the Mission’s photographic unit.

• Provide basic photographic training to other members of the Strategic Communications team.

• Assist with any other multimedia-related duties as required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

The purpose of this job opening is to generate a list of qualified candidates for inclusion in the Photographer, FS-4 roster. The entire assessment process takes an average of six months; all applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application (whether successful or unsuccessful) within 14 days of the conclusion of the process. Successful candidates will be placed on the roster and subsequently will be invited to apply for field mission vacancies open only to roster members. Roster membership does not guarantee selection.
