Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Multimedia Unit within the Communications and Public Information Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Juba. Juba is classified in the "E" category and as a non-family duty station. The incumbent directly reports to the Head of the Multimedia Unit.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority and depending on location, the FS-4 Photographer may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Undertakes activities to promote photographic coverage of priority issues, events and activities conducted by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan

  • Provides compelling photographic content for social media platforms and website on peacekeeping and political developments, including the South Sudanese peace process and elections

  • Prepares specialized photographic campaigns for global strategic communications campaigns

  • Ensures high-quality coverage of Troop- and Police Contributing Countries

  • Photographs and visually documents sensitive political processes utilizing a high degree of judgment, supporting strategic communications and risk and reputation management for the Mission.

  • Identifies visual content management strategies that can enable the Mission to develop a searchable photo archive

  • Helps combat misinformation, disinformation and hate speech through strategic photographic content

  • Works with UN Photo at UN Headquarters, UNHQ/NY to keep abreast of best practices, and new technology.

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with external stakeholders in order to deliver captivating photographs for the creation of people-focused stories.

  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders (political and civil affairs, human rights, child protection, etc), and cross-cutting teams, UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes to produce and disseminate impactful photographic content.

•Provides guidance and builds capacities among junior staff, as required

•Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification Certificate/Diploma in photography and demonstrated work portfolio of high-quality photographic and visual communications is required.

Work Experience A minimum of six (6) years of experience in professional photography and visual branding for a wide range of clients is required.

Photographic experience in conflict and post-conflict settings is required.

Experience in photography in international contexts is required.

Experience working in UN peace operations or Agencies, Funds, Programmes in the African region is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
