Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing Administrative, conference, Security and information services (www.unon.org).

Under the overall guidance of the Head of the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and direct supervision of the Peace and Development Advisor (PDA), the Intern will work in close collaboration with the Operations teams in the RCO and UNDP to support operational functions, including administrative and financial management of the Peace and Development Unit. He/she will learn to use the e-procurement system and work in close collaboration with UNDP Human Resource Department (HR) to support the PDU in recruitment of consultants and requests for services. He/ She will also work with the PDU Team to undertake the Unit’s planning processes for programming in 2021, and support analysis to deepen understanding of peace and development issues in Kenya and the region.

The RCO is looking for a self-driven Intern to join the team for a period of six months. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to learn how the UN system works, ongoing UN Reform, the various UN agencies and their respective mandates, Joint Programmes, and UN programming processes and Policies.

The Peace and Development Unit, UN Resident Coordinator’s Office internship is for 6 months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Under the overall guidance of the Head of the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and direct supervision of the Peace and Development Advisor (PDA), the Intern will:

1. Provide timely and effective operational support to the PDU in the RCO to facilitate the realization of the following: - Process procurement and financial documents for the PDU, and keep track of the administrative processes in close collaboration with UNDP HR and Finance Department - Reconcile records of payment for services in close collaboration with the PDA - Support RCO Team and the PDU in organizing meetings, note taking and follow up on action points and requests for information - Support PDU resource mobilization efforts - Support adherence to travel requirements, including follow up on processes and reporting 2. Support monitoring of the PDU workplan and results reporting - Track the implementation of PDU Annual Work Plan, planned activities and highlight delays - Maintain an updated calendar or other tool to manage the Team’s priority tasks, work flow and coordination with the UNCT, Unit and RCO - Support establishment and strengthening of partnerships with stakeholders and assist the PDU Team create an updated data base of key contacts within Government and Civil society - Support planning and organizing of webinars or face-to-face workshops in close collaboration with the PDU Team and support other partnerships-related activities as needed. 3. Promote analysis and information-sharing - Support monitoring of the political environment and analysis of implications of developments for peace and conflict - Facilitate inclusive discussions and debates on issues relevant to the overall mandate of the PDU, consistent with the workplan and results - Support the organization of trainings - Contribute to the drafting of briefs, lessons learned and best practices

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study: Master’s programme in International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Management Studies, Public Administration, or a related field.

Additional skills required: - Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Kiswahili - Experience in conducting research and analysis - Proficiency Internet and Microsoft Office Suite - Team player with strong initiative and willingness to learn - Ability to work in a multi-cultural working environment

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.
