Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action Areas of UN Women´s Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean cover a wide variety of topics in the countries of the region. In terms of peace and security, the region faces tremendous challenges which have been worsened by the COVID-19 crisis, with a disproportionate impact on women and girls. These challenges are related to persisting levels of poverty, exclusion, inequality, and discrimination that affect women´s human rights and prevent women´s meaningful participation in decision making. Regarding humanitarian action, natural hazards are particularly prominent and frequent in the region: hurricanes, landslides, storms, earthquakes, droughts, and floods.

Structural gender inequalities in the region are exacerbated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Women and girls are being disproportionately affected. While all people suffer in a crisis, women and girls face greater obstacles to reaching their full potential and leading safe, healthy, and dignified lives due these inequalities.
