Strategic Partnerships Pillar within the External Relations Unit

At the regional office, the Strategic Partnerships Pillar is one of the three functional pillars of the External Relations unit (covering regional Partnerships & RM, Advocacy and Communications). The Strategic Partnerships Pillar focuses on building partnerships with bilateral partners as well as private sector entities, non-profit organizations, and the media. In addition, the Strategic Partnerships team supports country offices with their private sector fundraising and engagement efforts and helps build their resource mobilization capacity.

Scope of Work

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Head of External Relations, the Partnerships Development International Consultant will provide technical support to the development and management of UN Women’s strategic partnerships and relationships with the private sector, as well as being the focal point for the day-to-day relationship management with a specified bilateral partner for ROAP based in the region. The Consultant’s portfolio will have a particular focus on growing ROAP’s engagement with new private sector partners and supporting the implementation of UN Women’s global Sustainable Finance strategy in the region, including the regional office’s engagement with both new and existing International Financial Institutions (IFIs). He/she will also contribute to the Regional Partnerships and Resource Mobilization strategy, as well as enhance capacity in the Regional Office (RO) and the region’s Country Offices (CO) and Multi-Country Office (MCO) to engage with the private sector and ‘new’ financing actors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with Regional Office units and Country Offices to manage the full cycle of building new partnerships with the private sector (focus on Corporate New Business Development and Innovative Finance, including IFIs): Supports UN Women offices on their one-to-one prospecting and negotiating of new business and innovative finance partnerships. Responsibility for driving a regional pipeline of prospects that convert into six and seven figure US$ partners in priority countries and/or the regional office.
  • Contributes to, and coordinates elements necessary to, build the capacity and skills in new high-value partnership development (Private Sector New Business and Innovative Finance, including IFIs) across UN Women offices in Asia and the Pacific: Contributes to the development of content and materials on how to secure partnerships with corporates via webinars, training sessions etc. Identifies and shares best practices and case studies within the Regional External Relations Community of Practice.
  • First point of contact for new partnership development (Private Sector New Business and Innovative Finance, including IFIs) across the UN Women network in Asia and the Pacific: Responds to inquiries from Country Offices on new partnership development.
  • In collaboration with the Regional Head of External Relations and broader Strategic Partnerships pillar, develops partnership models, products and materials that support the growth of a robust portfolio of partnerships in Asia and the Pacific: Analyzes New Business practices across all markets with the aim to develop a series of partnership models on Cause Related Partnerships and/or Customer Fundraising and/or Multi-faceted (Shared Value) partnerships and others that can easily be rolled out. Develops propositions for Shared Value partnerships with corporates and new financing actors; this involves strong coordination with programme units in ROAP and country offices in the region.
  • Ensures the effective relationship management of a key bilateral partner for ROAP based in the region: As a key focal point for the bilateral partner, ensures that the partner is regularly updated on the progress of the programme activities and initiatives within the scope of the broader partnerships framework, and ensures the Regional Head of External Relations and ROAP senior leadership are apprised of any issues/bottlenecks.

Monthly Status Report provided. This report can include updates on the progress in any of the following areas of work:

  • Robust regional pipeline of prospects developed, and updated lists, including entry points and partnership;
  • Pitches developed for prospective partners;
  • Progress update on meetings secured with potential corporate/innovative financing partners;
  • Corporate mapping and analysis conducted of Regional and CO priorities and opportunities is relevant and up to date (including Innovative Finance);
  • Progress update on the implementation of ROAP’s plans and initiatives for corporate engagement and prospect management;
  • Meeting summaries from discussions with the Innovative Financing Task Force;
  • Updates on relationship management with key regional bilateral partner; and
  • Capacity Building and Knowledge Management to colleagues in the region on engagement with private sector partners/innovative financing actors.

Supervision

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Head of External Relations. In the event, that the consultant needs to travel during the consultancy for assignment-related purposes, UN Women will bear the costs of requested travel expenses.

Required Skills and Experience

Required qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, business management, social sciences, public administration, international relations, communications, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in fundraising, business development, marketing and sponsorship;

  • Experience working in or with developing countries is an advantage;
  • Proven experience of identifying, developing and securing a new business pipeline;
  • Experience of working within corporate fundraising and innovative financing (including IFIs) in an international organization;
  • Good command of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are required;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment is desirable;
  • Experience with the UN system is an asset.

Language requirement:

  • Proficiency in English.
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

Contract period and work location

This a 12-month contract commencing on 16 December 2021 and ending on 15 December 2022. The International Consultant will be home-based and working remotely for the UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific
