Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Part of the Strategic Partnerships Division, the Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships and Advisory Services (MPAS) Section leads UN Women’s engagement with the private sector, corporations, philanthropy foundations, and individuals - both in terms of a substantive components and resource mobilization - and it drives a wide range of UN Women’s global initiatives: HeForShe, Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator (WEA), Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and Unstereotype Alliance (UA). It also leads the work with all UN Women National Committees, and on the development of the individual/digital giving as well as Advisory Services business line for private sector. MPAS’ main aims are to ensure that UN Women develops and sustains high quality and impact focused partnerships to achieve maximum results for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The MPAS team is seeking a Partnerships and Advocacy Intern to support in the development of new partners and the strengthening of existing partnerships for MPAS. This position will play a key role in the recruitment and successful onboarding of partners through providing diligent research and support. This position will also support the Communications and Advocacy team that is responsible for producing and disseminating private sector communications and for movement building (e.g., HeForShe work on engaging millions of men worldwide). A good working knowledge of the private sector as well as stakeholder engagement is essential to performing this challenging role. The Partnerships & Advocacy Intern will have varied responsibilities and will be relied on to confidently execute with timeliness and consistency, in addition to working in an open and collaborative way with other company functions including due diligence, operations, and prospective partnership research.

Duties and Responsibilities

Partnerships functions:

  • Conduct research to jointly identify strategies, opportunities and market trends with partners;
  • Monitor, research and follow-up on relevant documents and policies (press releases, working documents;
  • Support follow up on country specific partnerships and joint communication opportunities, including facilitating organization of events, meetings and workshops, as appropriate.
  • Support the updating of stakeholder strategy and plan, as well as relevant engagement with UN Women offices
  • Contribute to the development and drafting of concept notes, proposals, presentations, etc.

  • Support the coordination of annual report development including documentation and data reviews

  • Support in the planning and coordination of MPAS events, especially the HeForShe Summit in September

Advocacy and Communications Functions:

  • Assist in engaging people worldwide to join and become active participants of social movements like HeForShe
  • Support the development of products to further internal and external communications campaigns

  • Identify opportunities for earned and pro-bono media

  • Assist in stakeholder management and development
  • Monitor and respond to supporter comments and emails regarding online content and campaigning
  • Providing research based strategic advice on the development and use of new tools for online campaigning

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: business administration, marketing, international relations or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
    • Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part;
    • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two-years of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
