Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Medical Section of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). The Paramedic will be based in Bamako and reports to the Deputy and /or Chief Medical Officer.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Paramedic will be responsible for the following duties: Emergency medical assistance: Is member of the mission’s Emergency Response Team, providing emergency assistance to patients and working as a first responder; Identifies and plans clinic’s material, supplies and equipment requirement and raises requisitions accordingly; Liaise with Procurement and the Supply Sections to establish essential contracts for the mission; In collaborations with the supervisor, coordinate medical evacuations and cooperate with the Medical Services Division in United Nations Headquarter New York, and receiving facilities in home countries; Assists in providing medical support during evacuation and repatriation; advises the administration on the requirement for evacuation and/or escorts patients if needed; Concludes or closes medical evacuation files to enable staff members submit claims; Assists in making arrangement for deceased; Develops logistical plans to support field satellite clinics, and follows up on implementation; In consultation with Chief Medical Officer, develops and implements First Aid and basic life support (BLS) training programmers to needs, mission needs; Facilities outside training support and develops refresher programmes with the mission training section; Perform medical briefing for incoming staff; updates monthly medical reports.

Training and coordination: In consultation with Chief Medical Officer, develops and implements First Aid and BLS training programmes to meet mission needs; Coordinate with the mission training section as medical representative; Facilitates outside training support and develops refresher programmes; Has responsibilities for preparation and updating emergency kits, trauma kits and evacuation kits for doctors, emergency vehicles and strategically places kits in the facility; Assists in the maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment for the medical section; Provides on-the-job training to medical staff on the use and maintenance of equipment under the care of the Paramedic; Suggests and researches equipment necessary for proper medical support; Prepares requisitions for purchases of items and equipment after obtaining permission; Perform medical briefing for incoming staff; Works on-call status during nights, weekends and holidays as appropriate.

Administration: Identifies and plans the clinic’s material, supplies and equipment needs and raise requisitions accordingly; Liaise with the Procurement and Supply Sections to establish essential contracts for the mission; Coordinates medical evacuation and cooperates with the Chief Medical Officer and receiving facilities in home countries; Assists in providing medical support during evacuation and repatriation; Advises administration on the requirement for evacuation and/or escorts patients if needed; Concludes or closes medical evacuation files to enable staff members to submit claims; Assists in arrangements for the deceased; Develops logistics plans to support field satellite clinics, and follows up on implementation; in consultation with Chief Medical Officer, develops and implements First Aid and BLS training programmes to meet mission needs; Maintains medical inventory and supplies and distributes medical supplies needed for paramedic work to outstations; Arranges medical appointment and examinations to mission personnel; Updates monthly medical reports.

Competencies Professionalism: Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Formal training in CPR and, preferably, in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Uses time efficiently.

Education HS Diploma required. Nursing Diploma (B.S. or equivalent) in nursing, National registration and license of Nursing are required. Certification in PHTLS, ACLS and BLS is a requirement. Certificates in ECG, CPR is an asset.

Work Experience At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in nursing, Intensive Care and working in a conflict zone is required.

Experience with medical evacuation is desirable.

Supervisory experience is desirable.

Knowledge and understanding of relevant UN administrative policies and procedures is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, excellent communication skills, fluency in oral and written French is required and knowledge of English is desirable.
