Org. Setting and Reporting This post is located in the General Maintenance Shop, Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the Foreperson and General Foreperson of the Maintenance and Alteration Unit.

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions.

The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Foreperson of the General Maintenance Shop, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

-Inspect and prepare surfaces to be painted by plastering, spackling, taping and sanding, paper hanging and hanging reflective film on windows; -Remove old finishes, clean walls/areas to ensure proper adherence and cover surfaces with cloth or plastic to ensure protection; -Apply paint, stains and other wall finishes without immediate supervision; -Blend colors to match exactly a required shade, and marbleizing and staining; -Assist the Foreperson in inspection of required painting area including proper measurement and estimating material needed in order to produce quality work with minimum waste; -Remove paint splatters when finished and clean up all equipment, including brushes and spray guns etc.; -Assist in verifying quantity of supplies, and order materials needed for painting; -Instruct other General Maintenance staff on painting techniques and methods as duties allow; -Perform general light construction and building maintenance activities including carpentry, office furniture installation, concrete work, flooring, and ceiling and flooring repairs when required; -Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisors.

Education High School or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.

Job - Specific Qualification A certificate in OSHA Construction Safety is desirable.

Passing the Trades and Crafts Test (TCT) is a prerequisite for selection in the Trades and Crafts category in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the TC test at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Staff members who were granted a fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointment as a result of having passed a predecessor test recognized by the Office of Human Resources Management, and who have continuously held such appointments, are not required to take the new test.

Work Experience A minimum of three years of progressive working experience in painting or general maintenance related trade is required.

Experience in the use of the hand/power tools and equipment related to the trade is required.

Experience in related trades such as carpentry, furniture installation, and light construction is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.
