Contract

This is a Internship contract. It usually requires 0 years of experience, depending on education. More about Internship contracts.

For every child, an advocate

This internship is located in the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting advocacy strategy across the Vaccines and Health Global Advocacy Priority (GAP) in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Working under various members of the Health team, including the Creative Content Lead, COVID-19 Advocacy Manager, and Health Advocacy Specialist, the intern will support UNICEF’s response to the pandemic and the delivery of its long-term advocacy strategy on the improvement of global health systems.

The intern’s key task will be to conduct a landscape analysis of the global health space, including stakeholder groups, narrative frames, publications, organizations, public engagement campaigns, and potential partners. This will inform the global health advocacy strategy and future activities undertaken to achieve our advocacy and communication goals. The intern’s main day-to-day tasks will include:

  • Desk research
  • Writing short reports, briefs and pitches for the team
  • Supporting on content ideation and production
  • Attending planning meetings, partnership meetings and other internal events

To fill this role, we are looking for a student or recent graduate with a background in international development, public health or international affairs who sees themselves in a NGO/non-profit sector communications role in the future, and wants to further their skills in communications and advocacy. A background in communications, advocacy, media or related fields, with demonstrable issue experience in public health or international development would also be acceptable.

If that sounds like you, apply by submitting your CV and a PowerPoint/Keynote presentation of no more than 4 slides, which answers the following questions (think of this as your cover letter, no other cover letter is necessary):

  • Who are you, and why do you care about global health?
  • The project you will be working on is about building better health systems around the world in the wake of COVID-19. That means health systems capable of reaching every child with every essential health intervention they need. Think of this as a movement for the idea that equitable access to healthcare is human right, especially for children. In your PowerPoint:
    • Name this campaign for better health systems and child survival (think of it this way; what is hashtag you want to see people using?)
    • Name the two most important partners, stakeholders, media outlets or influencers you think we should recruit and explain why
    • Write an Instagram post in the voice of UNICEF’s Executive Director about the campaign

Advice:

  • We’re looking for a ‘read deck’ not a ‘presentation deck’. You won’t be asked to give your PPT as a lecture, it’s more like a brochure.
  • That said, keep it tight. You don’t need to go over approx. ~600 words for this PPT
  • We want good writers, so make your copy shine.
  • Send your PPT as a PDF only.

To qualify as a champion for every child you…

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree programme in international affairs, human rights, international development, public health, or a communications field, or have graduated within the past two years.

  • Have a relevant background in public health or international development. Experience in a prior NGO/non-profit role is an asset.
  • Excellent writing and research skills, including experience in writing short reports and briefing notes. PowerPoint mastery is an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
  • Work experience in a low income country or familiarity with emergency settings is an asset.

For every Child, you demonstrate…
