This is a UNV International University contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International University contracts.

Description of task

In order to carry out this work, the UN Volunteer will be properly trained both formally, through available workshops, seminars, e-Learning platforms; and informally through on-the-job training, intensive coaching/mentoring, shadowing other colleagues to familiarize his/herself with the relevant global and local policy and procedures related to ODM and Protection activities.

The UN Volunteer will be closely supervised by both senior and middle level management within the unit and it is expected that within a few months s/he will have the necessary skills to carry out many of the daily tasks with limited guidance.

Under the direct supervision of Information Management Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Facilitate and/or dispatch data collection in the country operation, including data collection methodology, data processing and data analysis.
  • Support responses to report requests from local staff, local governments, partners, donors and country operation.
  • Liaise with field offices on new reporting requirements and procedures.
  • Learn how to ensure that relevant data elements are collected in a standardized way that is compatible with Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Learn how to liaise with implementing and operational partners on data issues, participate in and/or organize inter-agency data groups at the Field level, and, if necessary, advise partners on methodological issues and promote timely reporting of data, according to agreed standards, for which they are responsible.
  • Conduct data collection audits in order to ensure that no unnecessary data collection is occurring and to ensure that all necessary data is being captured.
  • Record explicit data audit trails and metadata elements when calculating statistics, such that data sources, data quality and the methods of calculation are systematically kept.
  • Develop new data collection and data analysis tools, including efficient data capturing forms.
  • Manage the registration (“ProGres”) database, oversee data input and reporting in close collaboration with other officers (protection, registration, community services, etc.)
  • Create and maintain databases and spreadsheets that meet operational requirements.
  • Convert, import, and export data from systems as required.

Currently studying towards a degree or recently graduated (no longer than 12 months prior to application) in Statistics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Social Sciences or other relevant field.

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in refugee and asylum seekers protection and data analysis
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN University Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN University Volunteer include the development of:

Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN University Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

Selection process

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment. Interviews will be conducted by the UN Host Entity between 28 April and 21 May.
