This Online UNV assignment is part of the Addressing Counter-Terrorism in Aviation Security (ACTAS) Unit within the Special Projects and Innovation Branch of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).

The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established by the General Assembly in June 2017. The Office has five main functions: (a) provide leadership on the General Assembly counter-terrorism mandates across the United Nations System; (b) enhance coordination and coherence across the 43 Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact entities to ensure the balanced implementation of the four pillars of the Strategy; (c) strengthen the delivery of United Nations counter-terrorism capacity-building assistance to the Member States; (d) improve visibility, advocacy and resource mobilization for United Nations counter-terrorism efforts; and (e) ensure that due priority is given to counter-terrorism across the United Nations System and that the important work on preventing violent extremism is firmly rooted in the Strategy.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer or the designated mandated representative(s), the Online Volunteer on Aviation Security Support will:

Research linkages with local-level stakeholders in the aviation security eco-system and prepare a concept document outlining the viability of proposed activities, operational requirements, timelines, and next steps for possible integration into the TAM Programme.

Results/expected outputs of this assignment: Concept document outlining options for the Programme to strengthen linkages between national government stakeholders and the wider aviation eco-system:

Requirements:

Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible professional experience at the national and/or international level in aviation security or counter-terrorism or a related field is required.

Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and experience in handling web-based management systems, in particular SharePoint is required.

Excellent oral and written skills; excellent English drafting, formulation, reporting skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including national, regional and international partners, authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.

Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.

Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.

Qualifications/requirements:

Required Degree Level: Secondary Education

Required Experience: 2 years

Desirable:

Knowledge of United Nations and other counter-terrorism conventions, instruments and documents, in particular the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and its four pillars is desirable.

Experience working in the UN or other international development organization is desirable.

Experience in supporting capacity-building and/or technical assistance delivery is an asset.
