UNFPA APRO launched an internal “2023 Knowledge Share Fair” which aims to act as an opportunity to bring together UNFPA staff and consultants to document pioneering (innovations), promising, and proven to be good practices (PPP) that have worked well in different country offices, capture lessons learnt, strengthen documentation capacity, foster exchange and provide a networking platform for future potential collaboration and partnership. As part of the UNFPA Knowledge Share Fair, there will be a series of online writing workshops/writeshops and communication training planned by APRO. These virtual workshops will build country office documentation and writing skills.

In that regard, the UNFPA APRO is looking for the support of online volunteers who meet the criteria to provide online training support for this initiative.

Under the direct supervision of the UNFPA Asia and the Pacific Regional Programme Specialist, the selected online volunteer will remotely support the UNFPA APRO ‘Knowledge Share Fair”’ initiative by proofreading, editing and training staff to improve their writing skills.

The online volunteers will support country offices through online training in developing their draft materials relating to the thematic areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence and harmful practices, adolescents and youth, humanitarian emergencies, population and development, as well as innovation, disability, and human rights.

Specifically the online volunteers are expected to:

  1. With UNFPA APRO staff, review various types of practices submitted by UNFPA country offices.
  2. Brainstorm with APRO staff on how best to develop the 2023 UNFPA Good and Promising Practice publication planned for Q4 2023.
  3. Facilitate two online writing workshops/writeshops. The virtual writing workshop/writeshop will be hosted over 1-2 hours during Bangkok, Thailand working hours with the aim to build UNFPA skills in: -Identifying and writing for your audience. -Writing concise sentences and paragraphs and providing examples of clear and effective writing styles, including using active voice Identifying common mistakes writers make -Organizing a document to meet the readers needs -Making effective presentations using Powerpoint and Google Slides -Proofread and edit the selected practices submitted by country offices taking into account grammar, style, content and format.

Further guidance on the above tasks will be provided at the beginning of and during the assignment through call via Zoom/Google Chat and emails, as needed.

Working with UNFPA APRO, the online volunteers' schedule can be adjusted based on workload and timing. More or less volunteers time may be required depending on the number of submissions from country offices. More time may be required during specific periods of review and publication planned for September-October 2023.

Required Qualifications:

Academic Qualifications: Degree in Writing, Journalism, Communications, English, or related field; Years of experience: At least 5 years of experience in editing, writing, producing knowledge products, journalism, communications, or related field; Excellent English language editing, proofreading, and writing skills. Knowledge of the United Nations Editorial Manual is an asset; Excellent presentation skills and training experience; Innovative and creative thinking; Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with people of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds; Commitment to UNFPA’s values and working with communities of those farthest left behind is required; Experience working with English Second Language (ESL) aspiring writers is an asset; and Familiarity with technical terms related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sexual reproductive health and rights and using gender-based violence survivor centered language will be considered an advantage.
