The ROSEN Research and Awareness Unit produces evidence-based analysis on drugs and crime in West and Central Africa to inform policy making. Ongoing research projects include reports on trafficking in medical products, crimes in the fishery sector, drug trafficking, trafficking in cultural property and violent extremism in prisons.

The Unit also works with member states to develop their capacity to produce, collect, share and analyse drugs and crime related data.

As part our current research work on drugs and medical products, we aim to conduct a web scraping exercise of the websites and social media sites of law enforcement agencies to record seizures in UNODC data-collection tools, particularly of drugs and trafficked medical products in West and Central Africa.

By the end of the assignment, the Online Volunteers in Crime Research is expected to have produce a of most significant drugs and medical products seizures in West and Central Africa. This data-collection work will support flagship UNODC reports such as the World Drug Report.

We are looking for an Online Volunteer who has experience in data-collection through web scraping, with excellent research skills, appetite for data-collection and academic rigor. The task will include the following responsibilities: • Maintain a list of relevant websites (particularly law enforcement websites and social media sites) to monitor to track seizures, including of drugs and medical products; • Conduct daily web scraping of these website; • Create and maintain databases on drugs and crime in the region; • Produce analytics based on seizure trends based on this data; • Contribute to research pieces, including web stories.

The average estimated workload is expected to include roughly monitoring around 40 law enforcement websites in the region every week.

The Online Volunteer/s will have the opportunity to build connections with ROSEN Research and Awareness Unit, as well as the Research and Awareness Branch in Vienna and national counterparts.

Candidates should have strong research and analytical skills.

Background knowledge and working experience in crime research is desirable.

Experience in web scraping and creating/maintain databases is desirable.

A degree in a related field is considered an asset.

We are searching for people with a high feeling of responsibility and knowledge of scientific and academic work, to ensure the quality of the findings.
