One Atmosphere Intern

Overview

Support research and project management in air quality initiatives.

You have:

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in international studies, environmental studies, public health and/or social sciences, or related field.
• Demonstrated interest in air quality, policy, climate, and environmental policymaking and research.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite preferred.
• Experience developing learning and engagement materials.
• Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
• Comfortable with hybrid work environment and ability to work across time zones, including occasional meetings outside of typical hours.

About the Program:

Air pollution is the world’s number one environmental health risk, linked to up to 7 million deaths every year. The sources and causes of air pollution are complex, varying between places, across seasons and over time. As a scarce resource, access to clean air integrates questions of equity, climate, and data. WRI’s One Atmosphere program works to shift the climate conversation toward the causes of air pollution and what can be done about it. One Atmosphere leads several projects, including the Clean Air Catalyst (CAC): a USAID-funded consortium of 10 organizations working across 3 countries – Indonesia, Kenya, and India – to a) identify pollution emissions, b) build source awareness, and c) catalyze municipal change through engagement and policy. The CAC works to unravel the air pollution knot to better understand and address source emissions and other factors that worsen pollution. The CAC offers a unique opportunity to immerse a young professional in WRI's vision and culture, collaborating with technical experts and leaders in the international Air Quality field to meet the mission and requirements of a high-level donor. We are seeking a dedicated, driven intern to support the project's Research and Project Management workstreams in the summer of 2024. Working in this program offers you the unique opportunity to build up a diverse portfolio of skills and strategic vision oriented towards implementing a global climate and development project.

This position is hybrid and will require a few days per week in our Washington DC office.

What you will do:

In this role, you will gain exposure to private and federal donor management while collaborating with experts in air quality, policy, and engagement across the world. You will support the day-to-day project management of the Clean Air Catalyst by engaging with external partners and supporting the development and completion of CAC products. You will also assist the CanAIRY Alert Community of Practice’s ongoing engagement with municipal policymakers and technical experts.

Internship Learning Outcomes:

Canairy Alert (40%)

• Helping design and identify an online platform, learning materials, and/or long-term strategy for knowledge exchange of air quality policymaking best practices following the end of the Canairy Alert project Develop a plan/tool to assess knowledge gained from the Community of Practice Proofread 2-3 blogs.
• Experience using tools such as Asana, Microsoft Office, and Slack to manage a multi-million-dollar project across 5+ time zones and countries

Clean Air Catalyst (60%)

• Complete administrative and project coordination tasks such as notetaking, organizing databases, updating contact lists and tracking deliverables.
• Day to day social media.
• Draft and schedule weekly messages on Clean Air Catalyst’s social media platforms Blog development.
• Work with experts and colleagues across Clean Air Catalyst’s teams to come up with ideas for blogs.
• Proofread 2-3 blogs.
• Support the development and completion of CAC activities, which could include project management, drafting memos and/or blogs, and compiling the end-of-year report.

What you will need:

Compensation

The pay for this internship opportunity is $20/hour for undergrads; $22/hour for graduates and $24/hour for PhD students.

Length of Contract:

This is a full-time, 2-month internship (June- August) with a flexible start and end date.

Location:

• This is a hybrid internship that will be based out of our Washington D.C. office. You will be required to work in the Washington DC office at least 8 days a month.
• WRI will provide a laptop for the duration of your internship.
