ABOUT WFP:
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) saves lives in emergencies and changes the lives of millions worldwide. WFP's mission is to help achieve the goal of Zero Hunger by 2030.
In El Salvador, WFP supports vulnerable urban and rural households (particularly women and youth) to enhance their employment and income opportunities capacities to feed themselves better. In this, WFP works closely with government institutions, such as the Ministry of Education (e.g., school feeding), Ministry of Tourism (Gastro-Lab) and Ministry of Agriculture (microinsurance). Capacity strengthening is provided on the community and institutional level. In all programmes, emphasis is made on positively impacting nutrition, the environment, gender equality and the protection of beneficiaries. In addition, during all times, the WFP prepares and responds to emergencies with other national and non-governmental actors.
ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT:
In July 2022, WFP El Salvador began the implementation of its new Country Strategic Plan (CSP) 2022-2027. Based on a comprehensive consultation process and an analysis of the key drivers of food security and nutrition in the country, and based on WFP's humanitarian assistance, the essential themes of building resilience, adapting to climate change, and changing food preparation practices and eating habits have emerged as priorities for WFP's program portfolio. Climate change multiplies existing threats to food security and malnutrition, makes natural disasters more frequent and intense, makes fertile land and water more difficult to access, and increases agricultural productivity even more challenging. It will disproportionately impact the most vulnerable people, most of whom live in fragile areas prone to climate hazards, ultimately putting their livelihoods at risk, pushing people to seek opportunities in urban areas, often relying on the precarious informal sector or migrating irregularly out of the country. To respond to these complex challenges, WFP employs a food systems approach intending, for example, to strengthen the capacities of local farmers and connect them to institutional procurement, providing fortified food to beneficiaries of a national social programme.
