MANDATE OF THE DEPARTMENT: The Influence, Partnerships, and Communications Department is one of four units in the Policy, Advocacy, and Knowledge branch. It is home to UNAIDS' communications, partnerships, and strategic political work-mobilizing a spectrum of tools and relationships to support building an environment enabling the ultimate goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. It ensures effectiveness, impact and consistency in the organization-wide advocacy effort with a specific attention on addressing inequalities that drive pandemics and make some people, in some places, particularly susceptible to them. The department has two teams-the communications team, responsible for external-facing communicating across all of UNAIDS's media platforms and networked to regional offices in all 6 UNAIDS regions; and the Influencing & Partnerships team, responsible for building organization-wide initiatives and platforms to advance the UNAIDS' policy and political agenda. This position is situated in the Influencing and Partnerships Team. Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position: Reporting to the Director of the Influence and Partnerships Team, the Officer, Conferences, and Research Communities provides support in the area of advocacy and engagement with major public events including international conferences and with research communities.

He/she has the following key responsibilities:

  1. Supporting the Director, Influence and Partnerships with UNAIDS' engagement in global and regional HIV/AIDS conferences and with regional and global bodies of researchers.
  • Contributes to the development and supports the implementation of the organization-wide strategy for UNAIDS' engagement with conferences such as the International AIDS Society's biannual International AIDS Conference, ICASA, and CROI, systematizing the organization-wide efforts to this effect.
  • Helps the Director secure, create and implement UNAIDS events at each conference including securing high-level speakers and civil society representation.
  • Working with the Executive Office (EXO), supports the engagement of the UNAIDS Executive Director at the conferences.
  • Ensures high-quality engagement with organizations such as the International AIDS Society and other hosts of conferences, including by supporting connections throughout the UNAIDS joint programme beyond an annual conference.
  • Monitors and evaluates the impact of UNAIDS' participation in conferences in light of the impact on the targets set and towards increasing the UNAIDS' visibility and influence.
  1. Advocacy, campaigning and communications
  • Supports the visibility of and connection to key advocacy campaigns for the Joint Programme ensuring that they have a presence, where relevant, at events
  • Working with the Communications team, orchestrates press and media related to UNAIDS, its Executive Director and partners (including Cosponsors) at the conferences.
  • Ensuring placement of UNAIDS's speaker in optimum forums and at time slots with maximum audiences.
  • Supports the development of strategic communications plans and materials related to conferences.'
  1. Management
  • Develops and manages budgets and work plans for UNAIDS' engagement in conferences.
  • Oversees participation of UNAIDS staff in conferences.
  • Does all necessary preparatory and advance work for conferences, virtually in the run-up to the events and on-site at venues open.

Performs other duties as required. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Essential: University degree in communications, international relations, management, political science, public policy, public health or another area related to the duties and responsibilities. For internal candidates, a first university degree and seven (7) years of relevant work experience will be considered as equivalent. Desirable: Experience with UN System policies, procedures, and operations. Experience working on advocacy for public health and/or HIV issues. Languages: Essential: Proficiency in English.

Desirable: Knowledge of additional UN official languages. Additional Information: Positions at the international professional category within UNAIDS will be subject to the Organization's Mobility Policy. The above-mentioned position is a rotational position and its standard duration of assignment is linked to the ICSC hardship classification of the duty station.

Other similar positions at the same level may be filled from this vacancy notice. Annual salary: (Net of tax) US$ 64,121 at single rate Post Adjustment: 81 % of the figure(s) on the left side.
