However, despite this unprecedented progress, the burden of poor child nutrition and development remains unsolved, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, and in countries suffering from fragile governance and/or humanitarian crises. Currently, one in three children under five years of age is not growing and developing well because of malnutrition – undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight – and two in three children are living in food poverty, without the minimum diet they need to grow healthy.

Guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the UNICEF Nutrition Strategy 2020-2030 aims to prevent maternal and child malnutrition in all its forms across the life cycle and ensure the early detection and treatment of children suffering from life-threatening malnutrition. Our Strategy calls for a systems approach to improving maternal and child nutrition by supporting the delivery of nutrition-specific actions through five key systems: the food system and the health, water and sanitation, education and social protection systems. These are the five systems with the greatest potential to protect and promote nutritious diets, essential nutrition services, and positive nutrition practices that support optimal nutrition for all children, adolescents and women, in all contexts: development, fragile and humanitarian.

How can you make a difference?

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Senior Adviser, the Nutrition Specialist works with other members of the Management Unit on the Nutrition of School-Age Children, Adolescents, and Women towards the achievement of Unit work plan goals. The Nutrition Specialist collaborates with other Programme Division sections, particularly Health, Education and Adolescent Development, and Gender. Furthermore, the Nutrition Specialist works closely with all UNICEF Regional Offices, UNICEF Supply Division, and priority Country Offices to support programs on School Age Children and Adolescent Nutrition.

Purpose of the Position

The Nutrition Specialist is based at UNICEF Headquarters in New York. Under the leadership of the Senior Nutrition Advisor, who leads UNICEF’s work on the prevention of all forms of malnutrition among school age children and adolescents. The Nutrition Specialist supports the development of policies, programmes, advocacy, and knowledge generation for school age children and adolescents.

Summary of results-based key functions/accountabilities:

Technical support and guidance

  • Updates UNICEF guidance documents in line with latest scientific and programmatic knowledge
  • Offers technical support to UNICEF Regional and Country Offices on the nutrition of school age children and adolescents

Grant management and donor relations

  • Manages grants held by UNICEF Headquarters on the nutrition of school age children and adolescents
  • Strengthens existing donor relations
  • Leads the development of funding proposals and establishes new donor relations

Organizational representation

  • Represents UNICEF in global, regional, and national fora on the nutrition of school age children and adolescents
  • Serves as UNICEF representative on global expert groups
  • Convenes global actors on the nutrition of school age children and adolescents

Knowledge management

  • Establishes an internal knowledge management agenda on the nutrition of school age children and adolescents
  • Supports UNICEF Regional and Country Offices on knowledge management

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Strengthens global monitoring systems on the nutrition of school age children and adolescents
  • Contributes to meeting organizational reporting requirements at UNICEF Headquarters

Impact of Results

The key results will support the achievement of the UNICEF 2020-2030 Nutrition Strategy, 2022-2025 Strategic Plan, and work plan goals and objectives identified by the UNICEF Nutrition and Child Development, Programme Group. The key results will also help UNICEF achieve the commitments, its resource mobilization and knowledge management targets. The work will contribute towards the global targets of reducing anemia among school age children and adolescents, in addition to other global nutrition targets for children and women.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Advanced university degree in the fields of human nutrition and/or public health
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive, professional work experience at national and international levels in nutrition program management, and managing programmes to improve diets, practices, and services for school-age children and adolescents.
  • Experience in integrating adolescent nutrition programmes in Health and Education Systems as well as Social Protection is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in programming for the nutrition of school age children and adolescents with a system approach is required
  • Demonstrated experience in developing technical tools and guidance related to the nutrition of school age children and adolescents is required
  • Authored publications in peer reviewed journals on the nutrition of school age children and adolescents is desired.
  • Fluency in English is required and another UN language is an asset.
