UNICEF Malawi Country Programme (2019-2023) is aligned with the Government of Malawi’s Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS III) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The programme supports the Government of Malawi in meeting its commitment to respect, protect and fulfil children’s rights in line with international conventions and standards. The country programme is guided by the principles of children’s rights, equity, gender equality, inclusion and resilience and supports evidence-based, integrative and innovative programming. The vision is that ‘all girls and boys in Malawi, especially the most disadvantaged and deprived, realize their rights’. The programme focuses on early childhood (parenting, high-impact social services, early stimulation and learning), middle childhood and adolescence (learning, multi-sectoral services, active citizenship), communities (decentralized services and systems, community ownership, social norms), programme effectiveness (monitoring, evaluation, HACT, Innovation, Social Protection and Social Policy and External Communication. The programme is based on ‘leaving no child behind’, realizing ‘rights for all children in Malawi’.

The Nutrition programme in Malawi aims to prevent all forms of malnutrition through a systems approach using a lifecycle approach. As the Nutrition Specialist (Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture), you will be at the forefront of the development and preparation of maternal, infant, adolescent and young child nutrition programme/s. You will also be responsible for managing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting progress and programme results.

The Malawi Country Office offers an exciting and rewarding career opportunity for you to join our dynamic Nutrition team, where you will be responsible for providing technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable results in maternal, infant and child nutrition programmes/projects. In your role, you will be under the guidance and supervision of the Nutrition Specialist (Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture).

  1. Technical leadership in the design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of maternal, school age and adolescent nutrition.
  2. Leadership in the implementation of nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions at national and sub-national levels, including technical leadership in the food systems transformation to improve the quality of diets, services and practices for children, adolescents and women.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • An advanced university degree or higher in nutrition, public health, nutritional epidemiology, global/international health and nutrition, health/nutrition research, policy and/or management, or other health-related science field is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in nutrition, public health, related research or planning and management in maternal, infant and child nutrition at the international level, some of which preferably in a developing country, is required.
  • Experience in nutrition programme/project development and management is required.
  • Experience working with national and sub-national nutrition coordination and governance structures.
  • Experience in implementing nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions and a good understanding of the food systems transformation.
  • Experience managing European Union grants, as well as working experience in a UN system agency or organisation, will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in a developing country is preferred.

Technical knowledge and skills:

  • Relevant technical knowledge and skills in project development and management of maternal, infant, adolescent and young child nutrition /nutrition-sensitive agriculture/food systems transformation programmes are required.
  • Technical knowledge in food systems transformation and nutrition-sensitive agriculture concepts is required.

Language:

  • Fluency in English and a local language, both strong verbal and written skills, are essential.
