For every child, a hope

The position of Nutrition specialist in support of food systems will be integrated within the nutrition section of UNICEF Madagascar and will contribute to the construction of result 3 of the future CPD 2024-2028 regarding the quality of food through interventions in the field of the food system. Improving food quality for the population in general, and for women and children in particular, should lead to an improvement in dietary diversity indicators for these target groups.

How can you make a difference?

The Nutrition Specialist supports the development and preparation of the nutrition programme and is responsible for managing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting the programme progress of a sector of the nutrition programme within the country programme. The Nutrition Specialist provides technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable results in maternal, infant and child nutrition programmes/projects. This is carried out according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology (RBM), as well as UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, standards of performance, and accountability framework.

The nutrition specialist in support of food systems will operate within the UNICEF’s vision of the food system transformation, looking to complement the mandate of other stakeholders and in coherence with government partners policies. These interventions are defined within the framework of our partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, as well as with other United Nations agencies; the South, South-East and the Analanjirofo are the prioritized regions for our interventions.

The Nutrition specialist, as a food system expert, will be in charge of 1) implementation of the intervention to reach the objectives of the section on child food diversity 2) implementation of the collaboration with FAO, WFP and other partners in the contribution of UNICEF on the transformation of nutrition sensitive food systems 3) Oversee the UNICEF nutrition Technical Assistant based at the Ministry of agriculture in the execution of the joint workplan.

Impact of Results

The efficiency and efficacy of support provided by the Nutrition Specialist to the preparation, planning and implementation of nutrition programmes/projects contributes to and accelerates the national development efforts to improve the nutritional status of mothers, infants and children in the country. This in turn contributes to maintaining and enhancing the credibility and ability of UNICEF to continue to provide programme services to mothers and children that promotes greater social equity in the country.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: nutrition, public health, nutritional epidemiology, global/international health and nutrition, health/nutrition research, policy and/or management, health sciences, nutritional epidemiology, Agricultural, food science or another food system science field.
  • Work Experience:A minimum of five years of professional experience in a developing country in one or more of the following areas is required: nutrition, agricultural and food system, public health,

    nutrition planning and management, or maternal, infant and child health/nutrition care.

    Experience in health/nutrition programme/project development and management in a UN system agency or organization, or in resilience and climate change is an asset

  • Language Requirements: Fluency in French is required. Good knowledge of English and a local language is an asset.

Desirables:

  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency.
