UNICEF Malawi Country Programme (2019-2023) is aligned with the Government of Malawi’s Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS III) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The programme supports the Government of Malawi in meeting its commitment to respect, protect and fulfil children’s rights in line with international conventions and standards. The country programme is guided by the principles of children’s rights, equity, gender equality, inclusion and resilience and supports evidence-based, integrative and innovative programming. The vision is that ‘all girls and boys in Malawi, especially the most disadvantaged and deprived, realize their rights’. The programme focuses on early childhood (parenting, high-impact social services, early stimulation and learning), middle childhood and adolescence (learning, multi-sectoral services, active citizenship), communities (decentralised services and systems, community ownership, social norms), programme effectiveness (monitoring, evaluation, HACT, Innovation, Social Protection and Social Policy and External Communication. The programme is based on ‘leaving no child behind’, realizing ‘rights for all children in Malawi’.

The Nutrition programme is a key component of the Country Programme’s Pillar 1 which focuses on Early Childhood Development (ECD). The micronutrient programme is an integral part of ECD and as the Nutrition Officer (Micronutrients), you will be at the forefront of supporting the micronutrient programme’s overall strategic direction of the country by providing technical, operational and administrative assistance throughout the nutrition/micronutrients programming cycle. In doing so, you will carry out a variety of technical and administrative tasks to facilitate programme development, implementation, programme progress monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of results.

1. Support the Ministry of Health on programme development and planning

2. Ensure programme management, monitoring and delivery of results

3. Provide technical and operational support to programme implementation

4. Contribute to innovation, knowledge management and capacity building for implementing partners and districts frontline workers.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • A university degree in one of the following fields is required: nutrition, public health, nutritional epidemiology, global/international health and nutrition, health/nutrition research, policy and/or management, health sciences, nutritional epidemiology, or another health-related science field

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: nutrition, public health, nutrition planning and management, or maternal, infant and child health/nutrition care.
  • Experience in nutrition programme/project development and management is required.
  • Experience working with national and sub-national nutrition coordination and governance structures.
  • Experience in a developing country is prefered.
  • Experience in health/nutrition programme/project development within a UN system agency is an asset.

Technical knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of Malawi’s nutrition landscape is required
  • Background and/or familiarity with emergency is considered as an asset
  • Technical skills in programme development and planning is required
  • Proven networking and partnership building skills are an asset

Language:

  • Fluency in English and a local language, both strong verbal and written skills, are essential.
