How can you make a difference?

The Nutrition Cluster Coordinator (NCC) provides leadership and facilitates the processes that will ensure a well-coordinated, coherent, strategic, and effective nutrition response in Afghanistan. This position will be required to provide strong leadership based on trust, relationships shared decision-making and consensus management and will facilitate a network, that enable equal partnership to focus on broader sector issues and emergency as a whole in Afghanistan.

The Nutrition Cluster Coordinator will provide strategic guidance in the planning and implementation to nutrition emergency partners by facilitating a timely response in line with international standards and accountability to the population in need.

As an honest broker the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator will act as interface between humanitarian nutrition partners and affected populations to ensure the nutrition related needs of the affected population are properly addressed and all nutrition humanitarian partners are included in the response and funding mechanism.

The Nutrition Cluster Coordinator will endeavor to ensure prioritization based on evidence-based actions to enhance an accountable and effective nutrition response to the affected population.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  • Identify key humanitarian partners for the cluster, respecting their respective mandates and program priorities.
  • Identify other key partners including local and national authorities, etc.
  • Carryout capacity mapping of all current and potential actors – government, national and international humanitarian organizations as well as national institutions, the private sector and market assess to materials and services.
  • Ensure appropriate coordination between all Nutrition humanitarian partners, including national and international NGOs, the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, IOM and other international organizations active in the sector, as well as national authorities and local structures.
  • Ensure the establishment/maintenance of appropriate sector coordination mechanisms including working groups at the national, and if necessary, local level.
  • Ensure that participants work collectively, ensuring the complementarities of the various stake holder’s actions.
  • Promote emergency response actions while at the same time considering the need for early recovery planning as well as prevention and risk reduction concerns.
  • Ensure effective links with other clusters (with OCHA support), especially Health & Nutrition, Agriculture and Livelihoods and Education.
  • Represent the interests of the cluster in discussions with the Humanitarian Coordinator on prioritization, resource mobilization and advocacy.
  • Act as focal point for inquiries on the cluster’s response plans and operations.
  • Fulfill the cluster functions.

    • Build national capacity in preparedness and contingency planning.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree in nutrition, public health, or other associated disciplines is required.
  • A minimum of eight years of relevant work experience demonstrating technical expertise in the field of nutrition in emergencies is required.
  • Experience in IASC nutrition cluster coordination is required.
  • Demonstrative capacity to identify and monitor gender inequalities, as well as develop and implement gender mainstreaming in programmes.
  • The candidate should have demonstrated previous capacity in coordination; preparedness, response and contingency planning; analysis; advocacy; capacity building of partners; leadership; strategic prioritization and decision making through a transparent process involving multiple partners and perspectives; application and adherence to existing international standards and guidelines; and monitoring and reporting.
  • Out of the 8 years, substantial time should be spent in cluster coordination experience.
  • The ideal candidate should also have demonstrated emotional intelligence, robust networking, shared-leadership experience, teamwork and leadership and knowledge team building when required and thrive on working in a multi-cultural, fast-paced and fluid environment with minimum guidance.
  • Background and experience in leading nutrition emergency response in several countries is additional advantage.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Proven technical expertise in the area of nutrition assessments including survey, program implementation, monitoring and coordination.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language of the duty station is an asset.
