UNICEF is among the first responders to provide a multi-sectoral and integrated life-saving response to address acute humanitarian needs. A systematic gender lens will be applied to all analysis and programme design. Strengthening empowerment of local organizations and existing community structures is the backbone of UNICEF’s localization approach. This enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of the humanitarian response, while also contributing to enhancing community resilience mechanisms and social cohesion.

How can you make a difference?

On behalf of the IASC Humanitarian Coordinator and the Cluster-lead agency (UNICEF) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator (NCC) will provide leadership and facilitate the processes that will ensure a well-coordinated, adequate, coherent, effective, and timely response by members of the Nutrition Cluster (NC).

The NCC will lead the joint efforts to implement the six core functions of a Cluster, as established by the IASC5:

  • Supporting service delivery
  • Informing strategic decision-making of the HC6/HCT7 for the humanitarian response
  • Prioritization, grounded in response analysis
  • Advocacy
  • Monitoring and reporting the implementation of the cluster strategy and results; recommending corrective action where necessary
  • Build national capacity for contingency planning/preparedness for recurrent disasters whenever feasible and relevant.

Moreover, the NCC ensure that all Cluster members integrate the principles and practices of accountability to affected population in the nutrition humanitarian response, for which the above list has been later renamed as the 6+1 functions.

1. General responsibilities

  • Manage the Cluster coordination team at the national level and sub-national level
  • Organize regular meetings to coordinate the nutrition response and address common challenges
  • Provide strategic leadership to the sub-national clusters (both the roving team and area coordinators)
  • Ensure Cluster members’ contact list is regularly updated
  • Inform Humanitarian Country Team /Humanitarian Coordinator/Chief of UNICEF Emergency Section of Nutrition Cluster analyses and concerns
  • Facilitate information exchange within and beyond the Cluster through the dedicated website, the shared drive, communication groups, nutrition bulletins, and by ensuring active Technical Working Groups (TWG)
  • Proactively engage in relevant strategic coordination mechanisms on identified themes (Cash and Voucher Assistance, AAP, integration, humanitarian access, Inclusion, Gender, Gender Based Violence, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Localization, Nexus etc.).

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in nutrition, public health, nutritional epidemiology, global/international health and nutrition, health/nutrition research, policy and/or management, health sciences, nutritional epidemiology, or another health-related science field
  • At least five years of progressively responsible humanitarian work experience with UN and/or NGO, including nutrition programme management and/or coordination in the first phase of a major nutrition emergency response in one or more of the following areas is required: nutrition, public health, nutrition planning and management, or maternal, infant and child health/nutrition care
  • Previous Cluster Coordination experience is an asset
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in French and a good knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
