You have:

  • KRN/KRM, Bachelors in Midwifery from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • At least 4 years of experience in a busy maternity ward.
  • Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care is mandatory.
  • Respectful maternal newborn competency trainings highly desirable.
  • Strong clinical skills and knowledge of maternal and child health.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in challenging environments.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Job Description

To provide high-quality maternal and newborn care services, ensuring safe deliveries and optimal maternal and child health outcomes. The position will report to the maternity ward in charge.

Key Responsibilities

Maternal Care:

- Provide comprehensive antenatal care, including health assessments, counseling, and education. - Identify high risk pregnancies and making necessary referrals to medical officers. - Supervise and assist mothers in labor, monitor labor using partograph and nursing care plans. - Ensure all required observations, prescribed treatments and procedures are properly carried out and documented in the patient’s chart. - Provide postnatal care, including counseling on breastfeeding, family planning, and newborn care. - Identify and manage complications during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum periods. - Ensure birth registration is carried out promptly before discharge of both mother and baby. - Offering support and counselling following miscarriages, stillbirth, early neonatal death, birth asphyxia and congenital anomalies. - Arranging and providing health education for the mother, her partner and family. - Offer family planning counseling and services, including long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs).

Neonatal Care:

- Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation, thermal regulation, and early breastfeeding. - Monitor newborn health and identify any potential complications through assessment of the newborn. - Administer essential neonatal interventions, such as vitamin K and vaccinations.

Family Planning:

- Provide counseling and education on post-partum family planning methods. - Offer contraceptive methods, including long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs).

Record Keeping:

- Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic medical records for all patients. - Submit timely reports on maternal and child health indicators.

Training and Supervision:

- Participate in training and capacity-building activities to enhance skills and knowledge. - Supervise and mentor junior staff.

Community linkage:

- Coordinate with the community health workers to ensure continuity of care of all clients on discharge.

Additional duties:

- Supervise incentive staffs working in the maternity ward - Escort patient to other referral hospital when necessary. - Do hospital coverage and on-call as required. - Maintain equipment in good condition and submit regular inventory report of the same. - Carry out any other additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

- Reduced maternal and neonatal mortality rates - Increased uptake of antenatal and postnatal care services - Improved postnatal family planning utilization rates - Effective supervision and mentorship of junior staff.
