Overview

Provide nursing care for UNAMA staff.

You have:

  • Minimum age: 25 years old.
  • Technical/Vocational diploma required.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.
  • 36 months of progressively responsible experience in nursing care.
  • Fluent in English (Mandatory).
  • Ability to deal with emotionally charged and pressured situations.

Contract

This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

The JMS is the primary health care provider for all UNAMA staff. It aims to protect and promote staff health, to sustain and improve their working capacity, to contribute to a safe and healthy working environment, and to promote the adaptation of work to the capabilities of staff, taking account of their health status. With this in mind and given the current heightened security situation in the mission environment, we are seeking candidates with experience in providing healthcare in hardship duty stations.

Under the direct supervision of Chief Medical Officer, the UN Volunteer nurse will undertake the following tasks:

  • Attend the UNAMA medical clinic on a full time basis;
  • Assist the head nurse in supervising and coordinating nursing activities in JMS;
  • Implement infection prevention and control measures both in the clinics and in UN compounds;
  • Provide hands-on care to patients by administering medications, managing intravenous lines, observing and monitoring patients' conditions, maintaining records and communicating with doctors.
  • Provide health promotion, counselling and education. Interpret patient information and make critical decisions about needed actions.
  • Evaluate nursing activities to ensure patient care, staff relations, and efficiency of service;
  • Observe nursing care and visit patients to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed, and treatment administered in accordance with physician's instructions;
  • Accompany physician on rounds, and keep informed of special orders concerning patients;
  • Identify learning needs of nursing staff and design training programs for skill development;
  • Direct preparation and maintenance of patients' clinical records;
  • Inspects rooms and wards for cleanliness and comfort;
  • Serve as a role model for nursing employees and demonstrates leadership ability and management skills through fair decision making;
  • Ensure medical equipment and consumables are available and ready for use at all times.

  • Perform other related duties to the above assignment as requested by the CMO.

  • Support day-to-day operations through liaising with the various components in the mission and the local health care providers
  • Participate in meetings arranged on health related issues as and when assigned by the CMO.
  • This position is to provide support to the UN. It is not a humanitarian position requiring interaction with the local population.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Technical/Vocational diploma

Education - Additional Comments:

Certification in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Computer literate with the ability to use MS word, excel, powerpoint and email.

A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in nursing care.
