Eligibility criteria
Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.
Description of task
Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and direct supervision of the Head Nurse/Medical officers, the UN volunteer will undertake the following duties:
- Manage a walk-in clinic in a remote location under austere and often demanding conditions;
- Attend to all staff members in a walk-in clinic to provide routine medical/nursing care, first aid and assessing fitness to work;
- Respond to all medical emergencies and assisting medical officers in providing adequate care;
- Refer to the UN Medical Officer and ensure effective liaison between the patient and outside primary health care providers/hospitals, following-up on referrals and hospitalisation;
- Maintain proper documentation in the staff members’ medical files as well as the electronic medical records, such as nurses notes, vaccinations, incident reports and reports on work-related illnesses/injuries;
- Provide immunization and health education to staff members;
- Despense the requisite treatments and medications;
- Ensure operation of nursing equipment, regular maintenance requirements, maintenaning equipment inventories, evaluating new equipment and techniques;
- Maintain medical supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies, using equpments and supplies as needed to accomplish job results;
- Provide necessary guidance on health maintenance and disease prevention;
- Initiate care and clinical interventions according to patient's condition and in accordance with local policies;
- Maintain hygienic and safe working environment in compliance with the healthcare procedures;
- Assist in providing medical support during evacuation and repatriation;
- Proactively participate in health promotion activities by advising patients on different issues related to physical and mental health;
- Prepare patient for different intervention and escort patient to other medical facilities as required;
- Ensure safety of the patients while performing the duties;
- Plan and organize training and teachings (First Aid, current health issues) for staff members;
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/Requirements
Required degree level:
Bachelor degree or equivalent
Education - Additional Comments:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an accredited Diploma Nursing Programme with updated certificate/license of BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advance Cardiac Life Support) and a Licensed Registered Nurse.
Required experience:
48 Months
Experience remark:
Minimum four years progressive clinical experience in General Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Intensive Care or Anesthetics in a hospital.
Language skills:
- English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
Area of expertise:
General human medicine (with clinical experience)
Area of expertise details:
- Computer skills: Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications and other IT applications and office technology equipment;
- Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;
- Sound security awareness.
