Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With over 194 member states, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide.

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assistant governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner. FAO provides support in three priority areas: sustainable increase in production and productivity, agriculture-based economic growth, and increased resilience of livelihoods to threats and crisis.

The current portfolio of projects in South Sudan includes activities related to agriculture (crops), livestock, fisheries, natural resource management, and food information systems, implemented with humanitarian, transitional and development funding. The incumbent will contribute to the country’s programme and portfolio as foreseen in the project he/she will coordinate and be assigned.

Reporting Lines

The Radio Programming Associate will work under the direct supervision of the Capacity Building Specialist.

Technical Focus

  • Planning and developing radio programmes, including programme scripts.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Liaise with local radio stations and partners to implement FAO radio programming campaigns;
  • Monitoring local partner radio stations to ensure programmes are running according to the schedules;

  • Training and assisting local journalists to implement FAO programming;

  • Development of social media communication products i.e. tweets, web stories (in line with FAO’s storytelling guidelines, FAO style guide and relevant templates) and photo stories as specified under the communication plan for various donors;
  • All communications activities will be in line with corporate policies and guidelines of FAO

  • Organise and facilitating monitoring and evaluation sessions with beneficiaries;

  • Participate in radio distribution plans, including training facilitators and beneficiaries on how to operate the radios;
  • Collaborate with local NGOs including those which are FAO’s implementing partners for various projects, to identify interviewees with appropriate expertise;
  • Prepare reports on programme activities;
  • Produce feature stories about agriculture in South Sudan;
  • Investigate and scripting case study with the farmers;
  • Photograph programme activities in all locations and compiling photos;

  • Developing successful stories on different program activities from beneficiaries in various locations including both men and women;

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum diploma in journalism, mass communication, public Relations, social science or a related field. A Bachelor degree will be an added advantage or related field.
  • Four years proven knowledge and working experience in radio programming, particularly related to agriculture, fisheries, livestock and/or general food and nutrition security;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • A South Sudan National.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Experience in radio production, including programme planning, finding guests, booking interviews, and writing scripts;
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in radio programming;
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills;
  • Proven experience and ability to work with rural communities and community mobilization;
  • Proficiency in using audio editing software, such as Adobe Audition, DaletPlus, CoolEdit or Hindenburg;
  • Demonstrated leadership, managerial, supervisory coordination and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience in production in other mediums (television/video, photography) will be considered an asset;
