**OVERVIEW** ------------ Parent Sector : Natural Sciences Sector (SC) Duty Station: Hanoi Job Family: Natural Sciences Type of contract : Non Staff Duration of contract : From 7 to 11 months Recruitment open to : External candidates Application Deadline (17:00 Hanoi Time) : 21-Oct-2022 UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism **OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST** ----------------------------------------- 1. **Background & Rationale** Without necessary interventions, the amount of plastic waste discarded into the ocean could nearly triple from some 9-14 million tons per year in 2016 to a projected 23-37 million tons per year by 2040 (UNEP 2021). In Vietnam specifically, the levels of domestic waste (especially plastic) are growing rapidly due to urbanization coupled with high economic and population growth. UN Environment Program (UNEP) reports that up to 730,000 tons of marine litter are disposed by Vietnam in the ocean (accounting for 6% of global waste), of which 80% is inland plastic waste. UNESCO Hanoi has been implementing the “Mobilizing Youth for Zero Waste Future in Vietnam’s UNESCO designated sites” project to support UNESCO World Man and Biosphere Reserves and coastal communities in Vietnam to combat plastic waste by empowering youth and young professionals to put forward innovative and practical solutions in the areas of collecting, sorting, treating, recycling and reusing – all fostering sustainable and green growth in the country. The project is mainly in Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve for period of 2022-2023. Recognized in 2004, Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve is an archipelago located in northern Viet Nam adjacent to the Ha Long Bay World Heritage site and is the top-listed touristic destination in northern Vietnam for heritage tourism, eco-tourism and beach activities. The number of tourists visiting Cat Ba has been increasing, the amount of waste in general, and plastic waste in particular, has increased dramatically, exceeding existing waste management capacity and posing threats to environment and marine ecosystem.
