Job Overview: The mission of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. New Roots in Salt Lake City (New Roots SLC) is an innovative agriculture and food access program that provides opportunities for refugees to garden, start farm-based businesses, and access healthy, local, culturally appropriate produce.

The Markets Coordinator will build the New Roots program's capacity to help refugee farmers build their farm businesses and earn income, and to increase food access in low-income neighborhoods in Salt Lake County by coordinating sales outlets. They will support New Roots farmers’ sales to wholesale buyers, farmers markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and institutional markets and manage accounting and other necessary record keeping to track participant sales. The Markets Coordinator will also oversee farmer training on a variety of business development, production, and marketing topics, and coordinate with IRC SLC’s Small Business and Financial Capabilities teams for additional financial and business support. This position reports to the New Roots Program Manager.

Major Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Market Development and Management

- Manage market outlets, which include wholesale outlets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), community food distribution, and farmers markets; - Support farmers in building capacity to independently manage wholesale accounts and serve as a liaison between wholesale buyers and New Roots farmers; - Collaborate with New Roots team to develop and oversee implementation of farmer trainings on business development, marketing, food safety, production, and financial literacy; - Coordinate farmer referrals to IRC SLC’s Small Business and Financial Capabilities team to receive training and technical assistance on business development and access to business development services including capital; - Collaborate with New Roots team, farmers, and buyers on crop planning; - Oversee New Roots SLC's marketing communications, website, and social media; - Oversee market and CSA outreach to new customers and farmers; - Oversee day-to-day operations of New Roots market sales including harvest communication, packing, delivery and coordination of staff, produce incentive programs, and New Roots-operated food pantries; - Oversee data collection for markets, including utilization of SNAP and incentive programs, customer feedback, and farmer sales and growth; - Foster and maintain external partnerships to support farmer sales and educational outcomes.

Compliance and reporting

- Oversees food safety certification and compliance, including collaborating with New Roots Farm Coordinator on day-to-day tracking and maintenance of food safety infrastructure and systems and farmer training. - Spearhead New Roots financial systems, which includes recordkeeping, vendor payments, and farmer sales accounting and reimbursements through coordination with IRC SLC Finance team. - Coordinate with New Roots Program Manager to collect and maintain relevant data for New Roots grant and donor deliverables; contribute to grant writing and reporting requirements. - Contribute to grant writing and reporting requirements.

Additional responsibilities

- Supervises 2-3 staff members, as well as recruiting and managing volunteers, and interns to support programming in accordance with IRC’s People Manager Standards. - Coordinate with the New Roots Program Manager to support youth agriculture program activities and integrate the youth program into market tasks. - Use personal, insured vehicle and/or public transportation (where available) to travel and transport clients and materials as needed throughout the service delivery area. - Work with New Roots Program Manager in fund raising, development activities, and resource acquisition of in-kind and monetary donations; - Maintain professionalism, customer service, and IRC Way ideals when working with the community; - Participate in program meetings, weekly staff meetings, staff development activities and national skills building trainings, calls, and communities of practice, while fully engaging as a member of the team; - Support general office logistics, such as office support and front desk, as applicable and feasible; - Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the organization; - Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, in Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Business Marketing, Communications, or related field.

Work Experience:

- Minimum of 3 years related work experience in agricultural marketing, farmers market management, food access, local food systems, or related field. - Demonstrated understanding of local foods systems, food safety (GAP and FSMA), and agricultural marketing for small farmers growing in an urban farm setting. - Strong organizational skills including: multi-tasking, prioritizing, planning, and effective time management; Attention to detail and accuracy in work product. - Previous experience supervising staff and managing program implementation. - Ability to work independently as well as on a close, collaborative team. - Fluency in written and spoken English, with bi-lingual ability preferred. - Ability to communicate with limited-English speakers, and demonstrated multicultural experience. - Valid driver’s license, active insurance policy and access to reliable transportation.

Ability to lead in a way that recognizes that IRC’s work is best accomplished through the true collaboration of individuals from many cultures with a great variety of skills and perspectives; - Knowledge of or enthusiasm for agriculture, food access work, or culinary entrepreneurship encouraged; - Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships. - Experience working with refugee, asylee, immigrant, or other newcomer individuals preferred; Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment. - Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. - Attention to detail and accuracy in work product. - Conversational English preferred; proficiency in language(s) spoken by client group(s) (including but not limited to: Arabic, Swahili, Kirundi, Nepali, Pashto, and others) is desired. - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.

Position Directly Supervises: New Roots Specialist position(s), AmeriCorps member; may supervise:

seasonal staff, Summer Associates, Interns, and Volunteers

Working Environment:

- Standard office work environment along with travel in and around the service delivery area, as well as work at markets and farm sites. - Flexible to work Saturdays and some weekday evenings throughout market season, as needed. - Ability to safely lift 30lbs
