Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. New Roots is a program of the IRC that connects refugees with community gardens and farm sites so that they can feed themselves and their communities through market and wholesale opportunities.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:

The Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) intern will play a central role in the successful implementation of this sales stream for New Roots farmers. The CSA is a weekly vegetable box subscription. New Roots has a farmers market style CSA where CSA members can choose their produce each week as well as individual farmer CSAs where each farmer has their own group of CSA members that they harvest and pack produce bags for. The CSA intern will primarily assist farmers with their own CSAs, providing training and technical assistance to support them in choosing, pricing, packing, and distributing vegetables each week. This position is primarily in person, with 1-2 days in office or remote.

COMMITMENT:

May 13th – mid to late August (exact date TBD), 15-20 hours per week

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work with the New Roots market team to help farmers decide what vegetables go into the CSA shares each week and how to price each item in the share.

• Support New Roots farmers in the execution of CSA share packing and distribution.

• Design, write and send out weekly CSA newsletter to members. Work with farmers that have their own CSA’s to source information for each newsletter.

• Assist in recordkeeping related to the CSA, which can include but is not limited to: entering information about time spent with farmers each week and conducting regular supply inventories and restocking items when needed.

• Assist with New Roots farmers markets and/or other programming as needed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The intern will gain professional experience in managing a CSA program.

2. The intern will develop a deeper understanding of food safety and the work involved with successful implementation of farmers markets.

3. The intern will gain experience delivering culturally appropriate services to diverse populations.

Qualifications REQUIREMENTS:

• Background or demonstrated interest in gardening or farming, local food systems, graphic design, marketing, and/or content creation.

• Flexible schedule, with Wednesday and occasional Saturday availability preferred.

• Experience with website maintenance (Square), social media, or the development of email campaigns/newsletters.

• Experience working with English as a Second Language learners and communicating with the aid of an interpreter is preferred.

• Motivated, creative, reliable and able to work independently.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and basic computer skills

• Background check is required.

• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a concise, accessible way.

• Familiarity with CSAs, local food systems, and food access programming a plus (not required).

• Valid driver’s license, active insurance policy, and access to reliable transportation.

This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
