The purpose of this internship is to gain support  for the work of the section related to social cohesion/skills development, positive/conducive learning environments, safe school reopening/operations, child centred pedagogy, monitoring and evaluation of ongoing programmes******. This internship will provide the successful candidate with exposure to the working environment of a multilateral organization and support UNICEF's mandate to safeguard the rights of every child, everywhere.

How can you make a difference?

Under the overall guidance of the Chief of Education, the Intern will report to the Education Specialist and will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Support the survey on Primary Education Continued Learning during school closure – including working with the research agency to monitor progress, quality etc.
  • Support the development/finalization of a monitoring framework for the KOICA funded teacher capacity module in the Kilinochchi District.
  • Contribute to the Skills Development/Gen U strategy.
  • Support in external communications with MOE Primary Department, NIE, Provinces for ongoing work with Multi-level teaching.
  • Support the coordination and data/information collection to develop case studies on covid-19 education response.
  • Support the review of the relevant materials on education for social cohesion, and prepare key summaries in English to inform the programmatic review of the UNICEF”s social cohesion programme.
  • Contribute to the way forward/monitoring progress of the Bottle Neck Analysis in the Northern and Eastern Provinces by reviewing the findings and proposed way forward.

The general tasks may include:

  • Participating in meetings with partners and preparation of notes of meetings.
  • Research on specific subjects related to the above subject areas.
  • Taking courses as per guidance provided by the Education Team in Agora.
  • Preparation of briefs, presentations, draft proposals, case studies and budgets.
  • Compilation of reports related to projects with partners.
  • Any other reasonable task assigned by the supervisor

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:

  • Be at least 18 years old and enrolled in a graduate or Ph.D. degree program, or have graduated from one within the past two years
  • Background in social sciences/education or similar discipline
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records
  • Fluency in English, written and spoken
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to distil lengthy and often complex content into brief summaries
  • Interest in development-related fields, humanitarian work, and improving the quality of education. Interest in development-related fields, humanitarian work, and improving the quality of education.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and be flexible in daily workings
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment
  • Knowledge of standard Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and computer skills such as SharePoint
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. Father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office, and have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to

UNICEFs General Terms and Conditions The successful intern will be governed by the following conditions:

  • Status: Although not considered a staff member of UNICEF, the intern shall be subject to the authority of the Executive Director and the authority delegated by her to the Division Director and Heads of Offices. Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNICEF's officials and staff members.
  • Financial support: UNICEF will provide a monthly stipend in accordance with UNICEF rules and recommendations. Interns must make own arrangements for living expenses. Living accommodations and other expenses are also their own responsibilities. Travel costs to and from the duty station will be negotiated according UNICEF's rules and regulations.
  • Medical health and coverage: UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship; therefore, the intern must carry adequate and regular medical insurance.
  • Confidentiality and publication of information: An intern, you will respect the confidentiality of information that you collect or are exposed to at UNICEF. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNICEF without the explicit written authorization by the Head of Office or Division Director.
  • Employment prospects: The UNICEF internship programme is not connected with employment and there is no expectancy of such. Interns cannot apply for posts advertised internally to UNICEF staff during the period of internship.

Should travel to the zone office/s become necessary, UNICEF Sri Lanka country office will support according to UNICEFs rules and regulations. UNICEF will also provide a monthly stipend in accordance with UNICEF rules and recommendations if this is not covered by the University. All other costs will be borne by the university/candidate.
