Social Policy and Education Research Intern

South Sudan signed a peace agreement in February 2020, ending 7 years of civil war. The war has left millions of families displaced from their homes, living as refugees in neighboring countries, or in settlement camps. Deprived of their means of survival as subsistence farmers, the majority of South Sudanese families have experienced the impact of war through not only losing their homes but being forced to live in abject poverty. South Sudan currently has some of the highest child and women mortality rates and millions of children are not attending school.

How can you make a difference?

The Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) has started the work of re-building South Sudan. The country is rich in oil, other minerals, agricultural potential and human resource capital. If the peace initiatives are a success, the country can reap the potential of their resources and becoming a vibrant economic and social post-crisis success story. To begin to rebuild the education system, the UNICEF South Sudan Social Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (SPPME) Section Social Policy unit is conducting 2 comprehensive studies in the education sector as well as a range of financial and budget analysis studies.

Modality: Paid – Full time

Tentative start date: February 2021

Duration: six months

To qualify as a/an [champion or advocate] for every child you will…

  • Be enrolled in an advanced/undergraduate university degree (Master’s or higher) or recent graduation from an undergraduate or master’s programme within the last two years in education or social development studies
  • Core background: relevant background in education and conducting research,
  • Additional background: social development, economics; calculating and interpreting basic financial data
  • Technical Experience: experience in survey studies, including capturing and evaluating qualitative and quantitative data; intermediate to advanced excel skills
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required, with ability to speak Arabic highly advantageous. Knowledge of another official UN language (Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
