The Nutrition Technical Team within UNICEF Supply Division requires the services of three academic writers to draft and prepare four academic papers ready for publication within three areas of specialization. 1. Food Science and nutrition (specifically Ready to Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) 2. Commodity food / nutrition markets or food economics 3. Public supply chains, health system strengthening, epidemiology and/ or global health (nutrition).

Scope of Work. The incumbents will be working with UNICEF Supply Division technical nutrition team and Nigeria Country office producing four academic papers that are concise summaries of existing papers. The first two papers will consist of a review of nutritional and food safety aspects of ingredients for RUTF, and the third paper will be a composition of the information from these two papers combined with the market assessment of these ingredients. The fourth paper is an independent topic specific to the Nigerian context and will be a condensed paper of a barrier analysis for anaemia prevention and treatments.

We are therefore seeking three qualified writers with demonstrated writing skills in three main technical domains listed above. The starting documents consist of page counts from 30-70 pages (see below). Please note that only primary authors of the source reports used in this consultancy will be credited in published journal articles.

Deliverables - Nutrition and food safety One paper developed from the report on the topic areas of nutritional assessment of alternative ingredients for RUTF (current report is 36 pages) One paper developed from the report on the topic of food safety of alternative ingredients for RUTF (current paper is 42 pages)

Market analysis of food commodity Markets One paper which is a composition of the Market analysis and market availability of ingredients for new RUTF and LNS (Lipid Nutritional Supplements) formulations including relevant material from the nutritional assessment and food safety papers of alterative ingredients for RUTF (current market analysis report is around 30 pages)

Supply Chain, Health system strengthening and Global Health One paper developed from the report of the Barrier Analysis for Aneamia prevention and treatments in Nigeria (current report is 70 pages)

Objectives Review, edit and fact check current papers as needed Identify and agree with UNICEF focal point on the best journals for publishing the papers Consolidate previously drafted papers into concise academic papers (to a specified journal word count) ready for publication in a peer review publication. Draft papers/ reports into academic report papers ready for publication.

Market Analysis of alternative RUTF Ingredients paper 1. Review existing papers (Market Analysis of analysis and market availability of ingredients for new RUTF and LNS, Food Safety and Nutritional Assessments of Alternative RUTF). 2. Attend and participate in a group discussion on the key insights of the findings of the papers. Discussion meeting arranged and held; key insights identified. 3. Distil insights from the three reports as described under ‘deliverables’ above and discussion from working group to develop the paper framework Key points and argument developed for a synthesis academic paper. 4. Draft outline of synthesis paper and share with UNICEF focal point. 5. Draft synthesis paper to the agreed outline. 1st draft of synthesis paper. 6. Circulate within UNICEF reviewers, edit as required. 2nd draft manuscript. 7. Edit and wordsmith 2nd draft paper to preferred academic journal requirements. 8. Share final paper with UNICEF for internal review and sign off Final paper shared with UNICEF. 9. Recommend submission approach based on finished paper. Academic journal submission advice for each paper.

Barrier Analysis for Aneamia prevention and treatments in Nigeria. 1. Draft outline of paper and share with UNICEF focal point Paper outline shared for review. 2. Draft paper to the agreed outline 1st draft manuscript for specific paper. 3. Review, edit first draft to the agreed academic journal word count and requirements Edited first draft of paper. 4. Circulate within UNICEF reviewers 2nd draft manuscript for each paper. 5. Edit and wordsmith 2nd draft paper to preferred academic journal requirements. 2nd draft synthesis paper edited. 6. Final version of synthesis paper completed to UNICEF’s satisfaction and ready for journal submission - Papers finalized. 7. Recommend submission approach based on finished paper and specific journal procedures - Academic journal submission advice for each paper.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Disciplines:

  • Advanced university degree in relevant area for each specific paper.
  • Food technology/ engineering, food science / food safety, microbiology, nutrition
  • Commodity markets, food economics, or other relevant discipline within the food sciences area.
  • Supply chain management or Health systems strengthening
  • Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience, publications, or work experience in academic writing in the specific topic areas listed under minimum qualifications.

In addition: Publication in academic or leading topic journals (please submit example publication(s)

Editorial and word-smith skills Knowledge of Salmonella control, Codex standards, product specification development, food safety issues and risks management for papers under related topics) Ability to analyse data and reflect trends, ability to synthesise divergent data sets and to consolidate insights into a concise, clear and well-informed academic paper. Ability to review and edit scientific papers/ market commodity reports with a high standard of English

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
