Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. With presently 194 member states, FAO works in more than 130 countries worldwide, including Vietnam where the Organization has operated since 1978. The current Country Programming Framework (CPF) for the period of 2022‑2025 has four priority areas: (1) One Health (OH); (2) Climate change response, environment and natural resources management; (3) Food safety, sustainable production and consumption, and equitable livelihoods for all; and (4) Governance, Gender and PWDs. The incumbent’s tasks will mainly contribute to the fourth priority area.

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative in Viet Nam, the direct supervision of ECTAD Senior Technical Coordinator of the Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Disease (ECTAD) in Viet Nam and in close collaboration with FAO Viet Nam and relevant government colleagues.

Technical Focus:

Wildlife value chain management

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Work with National wildlife management specialist, CITES and FAO focal points to develop outline, work plan and methodology for development of National action plan (NAP) for captive wildlife breeding and ranching management in Vietnam 2022-2027.
  • Conduct desk-review and stakeholder assessment on national legal framework and state management of captive wildlife breeding and ranching to develop a brief report on state of captive wildlife farming in Vietnam.
  • Conduct field assessment using quantitative approach to describe the state of wildlife farming and management.
  • Work with National wildlife management specialist to draft the NAP with focus on the wildlife biology, farming conditions, training, registrations etc..
  • Participate and present review results, draft of NAP and support in record recommendations in the meetings organized by FAO and CITES.
  • Finalize deliverables according to inputs/comments and requirements of FAO or CITES.
  • Undertake other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in forestry, wildlife biology or other related fields
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience working in forestry and wildlife management
  • Work experience with government authorities in Viet Nam on the management of wildlife or wildlife captive breeding or wildlife trade
  • Working knowledge of English with excellent writing skills and analysis
  • National of Vietnam.
