Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO Syria Country Office is to assist government to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to develop the agricultural fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

The Communication Specialist will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Syria and the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, FAOR Network in RNE, and technical supervision of the FSL Cluster Coordinator.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Produce infographics and reports regarding the FSL Cluster data illustrating the outcomes and achievements of the FSL Cluster partners; • Proactively gather information from FSL Cluster partners and other organizations which will complement the FSL Cluster activities in the coordination and information management; • Support the development of graphs, charts, analytics, diagrams, relevant info-graphics and update internal and external information materials; • Assist in standardizing the FSL Cluster trackers and templates, FSL Cluster meetings presentation, situation reports as well as fonts, formatting, icons, images and layout techniques. • Support Whole of Syria on developing and standardizing reports templates as required. • Assist in the organization and arranging the FSL Cluster meetings including record the minutes of meetings, sending out invitations, preparing the attendance sheets and booking the meeting rooms as requires. • Support daily communications of the team with the stakeholders, develop and maintain a calendar for all the meetings and deadlines for the team’s workflow. • Identify secondary data and information resources as needed. • Identify new and up to date tools/platforms that can support the FSL Cluster communication efforts and level-up the impact of the messaging. • Track, report and eventually disseminate selected news releases on the humanitarian and food security situation in Syria. • In line with the FAO web policy and in close collaboration with OCCI, generate web content in English for FS Cluster website and FAO specialized webpages (e.g. international years), in addition to OCHA Humanitarian Response FSL dedicated web page ensuring Turkish or Arabic translations when appropriate. • Oversee translation processes for the communication materials for the FSL Cluster when appropriate, including communication with the companies and the payment. • Support the communication and advocacy activities on the cross-border programme in Syria and promote visibility of the ongoing activities. • Develop, translate and support the publishing of relevant communication materials for cross-border programmes, projects and international years, ensuring correct FAO corporate branding in compliance with latest guidelines, including FAO style, Terminology and Names of Countries. • Ensure that publications and documents be processed via the Publications Workflow System (PWS) in a timely manner, starting from the planning phase. • Prepare talking points, speeches and presentations for event launches, visits of senior officials and emergency situations; • Developing and archiving a media database for the FSL Cluster through gathering photos, videos, human interest stories from the field and related to FSL Cluster partners’ programs; • Preparing and disseminating food security and COVID-19 related information along with monitoring tools in partnership with FSL Cluster partners. • Develop strengthened relationship with the gFSC for communication and advocacy efforts. Follow-up with the most updated guidelines and implement them in FSL Cluster communication efforts. • Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• The candidate must have a degree in communications, public relations or other relevant post-secondary qualification. • Proven experience in the field of communication on humanitarian and development activities preferably with the UN or other international agencies. • Familiarity with the agriculture sector is an asset. • Excellent oral and written command of English and Arabic, communicative skills, ability to operate under pressure and good interpersonal skills. • National of Turkey.

Technical/Functional Skills

• Good communication, analytical, presentation and reporting skills and an excellent team player; • Competency in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint computer packages, as well as with statistical software; • Proven experience with UN regulations and procedures will be an added advantage.
