BACKGROUND

UNICEF is the United Nations Children’s Fund, which has more than 10,000 staff members working in 190 countries and territories around the world. With the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Sustainable Development Goals as our guide, UNICEF works with the government and others who are passionate about child rights to ensure every child has the opportunity to grow healthy and happy; live safely; and achieve their full potential.

We are looking for an intern to contribute to our team for a period of 6 months in 2022, with potential extension if need arises and intern is available. We offer supervision, career guidance, exposure and participation to UNICEF programme planning and implementation, and the opportunity to work FOR EVERY CHILD.

WORK ASSIGNMENT & SCOPE OF WORK

Under the guidance and supervision of the UNICEF Chief of Child Protection (CP)/Child Protection Specialist/Officer, the Child Protection Intern supports the effective implementation of programmes under the Child Protection section. Initiatives may include but not be limited to:

- Children Affected by Migration

- Violence Against Children

- Social Service Workforce Strengthening

- Child Online Protection

- Alternative Care (for Children without Parental Care)

- Justice for Children

Roles and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

- Support desk reviews and analysis of background documents, review of draft reports and Terms of Reference (ToR), including keeping record of comments, providing suggestions for improvements and ensuring that comments are incorporated and addressed as needed.

- Logistical and administrative support for key meetings and events with government counterparts, partners and other stakeholders including preparation, interpretation, drafting minutes of meetings, summaries of reports, and other relevant documentation as needed.

- Support the implementation of activities under Child Protection programmes including organizing webinars and online events.

- Support the monitoring of progress of activities under Child Protection programmes.

- Support review of relevant research and studies, development of knowledge products and materials on child protection, and collation of data/documentation as required.

- Other tasks that may arise related to the work areas of the Child Protection section.

Requirement:

This opportunity will be offered to national applicants at this point as a national intern would be more suitable for the office’s business activities with the needs for fluency in the local language to collaborate with government partners. Should the initial attempt to recruit national internship is unsuccessful than the office will proceed to recruit a potential international candidate through the global internship program. This internship is sponsored by the partner institution and conducted in accordance with the agreement between UNICEF and the partner institution, as well as the provisions of this procedure. A partner institution normally sponsors the full stipend amount stipulated in paragraph 18 of PROCEDURE/DHR/2021/006.

About you:

Our ideal candidate has an impressive analytical mind, a keen understanding of international development in an upper-middle income country and sound judgment. How and Why are among your favourite words, and you are always looking to understand what works, and what doesn’t, to help transform international development. You have a desire to help UNICEF Malaysia and its partners to do their work better for children, and to help collect the evidence they need to improve the programmes that they deliver. This includes excellent listening and communication skills and the ability to learn and share knowledge, encouraging the learning of others.

Qualifications:

- Currently enrolled in a graduate (Master’s) or undergraduate (Bachelor’s) or have graduated within

the past two years.

- Field of study in International Development, Child Protection, or other relevant Social Science.

- Demonstrable proof of excellent academic performance.

- Demonstrable excellence in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in English (including active listening and information synthesis and strong writing abilities).

- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a multi-cultural team.

- Previous relevant work or volunteer experience highly desired.

Availability:

- Period of 6 months, Monday - Friday (full time- 5 days per week).

- Expected to start as soon as possible

Conditions of the Internship:

- The intern should have his/her own laptop and work remotely but will receive UNICEF email account during the internship period.

- For a locally recruited intern, the intern will receive a basic stipend of RM1,690 a month. Otherwise, in case of an international internship performed entirely remotely outside of the duty station, the monthly salary will be equal to 70% of the net monthly salary of the GS level 3 step 1 of the location of the remote internship, or the applicable amount payable as per paragraph 18.1 or 18.2 whichever is lower. If the internship is performed remotely but from within the duty station, the monthly stipend will be payable in accordance with paragraph 18.1 or 18.2 of PROCEDURE/DHR/2021/006.

- Currently, the intern is expected to work remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions in travel. For national applicants, should COVID-19 restrictions be lifted, the intern may be expected to work in UNICEF Putrajaya office at least three days of the week and remotely for the other working days.
