Contract

This is a Consultancy contract. More about Consultancy contracts.

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, result

Nepal is facing a mental health crisis among its youth. Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety commonly arise in adolescence and often go unrecognized and untreated, which can impact adult mental health and potentially lead to self-harm or suicide. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nepal had the second highest suicide rate in South East Asia. Since the pandemic began, child helplines have reported an increase in calls from children in crisis and statistics released by the Nepal Police show a 41% increase in suicide for girls and 46% for boys.

There is a widespread stigma present in Nepali society surrounding mental health. Mental health has become an even-more pressing issue, as children and adolescents worldwide facing the implications of prolonged lockdowns. This is reflected in UNICEF’s global strategy. One of the Global Advocacy Priorities going forward is to secure investment and action to support and protect the mental health of children and young people, and to bring an end to neglect, abuse and childhood traumas that drive poor life outcomes. The State of the World’s Children 2021 report will focus on adolescent mental health. It will show that children and young people living with mental health conditions without support are likely to face widespread challenges including social exclusion and a reduced capacity to learn. Consequently, UNICEF Nepal is facilitating mental health sessions for private sector employees, to normalize conversations surrounding mental health. The focus of these mental health sessions is on employee and family mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, the sessions address factors affecting lives at home and at work; self-care; identifying and coping with stress; managing stress among children; and preventing COVID-19 and provide information on family-friendly work environment.

For this, UNICEF Nepal would like to engage the services of psychiatrists to facilitate the sessions to encourage discussions around mental health, provide practical tips and exercises to reduce stress, prioritize mental health for employees and their families and promoting family-friendly work environment. The facilitator is required to prepare the content/ presentations, facilitate sessions, prepare reports and work in close coordination with the B4R team.

The overall objective of establishing this long-term arrangement is to facilitate and expedite the process by which UNICEF Nepal will hire the services of psychiatrist to prepare the content and facilitate the mental health sessions for private sector employees/ entrepreneurs/ related stakeholders. This will contribute in achieving UNICEF Nepal's advocacy goal to aware adolescents and young people in mental health and encouraging them to seek help or refer friends/family to services by 2022.
