Background and Justification
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
The onset of digital and social media has led to a marked increase in the use of infographics and visual material as a means of conveying and sharing information in a quick, concise and visual form. The Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office for UNICEF (ESARO), based in Nairobi, seeks a Consultant to produce visual materials in support to UNICEF programme sections including Education, Health, HIV, Child Protection, Nutrition, Water and Sanitation and Communication for Development.
The Consultant will provide support to the Office of the Regional Director (design and production of branded visual materials for key regional meetings) and remote guidance and support (compliance with UNICEF branding and infographics) to Country Offices within the Eastern and Southern Africa region.
Scope of Work
The Consultant will be supervised by the Regional Chief of Communication, however s/he will have interaction with technical focal points within ESARO. The Consultant’s main tasks will be to:
- Conceive, design and produce visual communication materials, including briefs and short reports, that illustrate and enhance communication around UNICEF’s work and issues affecting children;
- Develop infographics for online outlets and donors;
- Provide all materials to UNICEF ESARO on a hard drive and/or uploaded onto public drive; and
- Provide inputs into strategies to disseminate infographics and other visual material on digital and social media.
- The material will be compiled following the UNICEF technical and ethical guidelines. The material will be distributed internally at UNICEF and externally with partners for advocacy purposes, to both traditional and social media outlets.

Payment Schedule
Payment will be made upon the satisfactory quality deliverables as scheduled and described in the previous section.
Desired Competencies, technical background and experience
- A first-level university degree in a related field
- A minimum of two years’ relevant professional work experience in graphic design: Print, web, graphics for social media, infographics, large-format graphics and various other collateral materials, video a plus.
- Knowledge of relevant computer software, internet navigation and various office applications, specifically interactive digital media including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat, with a thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), HTML, and motion graphics/animation
- General ability to draft ideas and concepts, clearly and concisely, in written and oral form
- Proven ability to research, analyze, evaluate and synthesize information
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Proven ability to work as part of a team and familiarity with UNICEF programmes is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships, both within and outside the organization.

Administrative Issues
The consultant will work under the supervision of the Regional Chief of Communication and work closely with the Communication Specialist to make sure that the end product is of good quality in terms of desired layout, artwork concepts and final output.
- The graphic designer will provide initial concepts for approval and incorporate feedback and comments from UNICEF.
- The assignment will be remote based
- Any cost incurred to enable the consultant successfully carry out the assignment, such as computer and design software, will be covered by the consultant
- The final products should be delivered to UNICEF in Indesign and PDF formats - both low and high resolution, and original data files.
Conditions
- The drafts and final documents, as well related data, will be the property of UNICEF after completion.
- “As per UNICEF DFAM policy, payment is made against approved deliverables. No advance payment is allowed unless in exceptional circumstances against bank guarantee, subject to a maximum of 30 per cent of the total contract value in cases where advance purchases, for example for supplies or travel, may be necessary”.
Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws
Risks
Under-utilization of key communication opportunities hampers overall UNICEF communication efforts and reduces programme effectiveness. Such risks to be mitigated with proper supervision and clear terms of reference.
