This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of mission (CoM) and the direct supervision of the Emergency and Preparedness Coordinator, in close coordination with Project Officer of Shelter/ Non-Food Items (S/NFI), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Compile general background information from readily available sources, and draft supporting tables and charts in relation to the development and implementation of HLP strategies/ methodologies/ approaches for the IOM Burundi’s S/NFI programme.
  2. Coordinate the collection and verification of documents, actions and data with the S/NFI Unit which is required for prioritizing HLP protection concerns in S/NFI programming support to appropriately address and/or resolve them.
  3. Describe the progress of ongoing HLP protection activities in Burundi, investigate designated aspects of project activities, and discuss findings with the supervisor to identify implications for the work of the unit.
  4. Participate in capacity building and sensitization training for stakeholders and IOM team members.
  5. Obtain information from relevant government, Cluster and humanitarian counterparts, as well as beneficiaries and host communities, and draft recommendations for solutions for IDPs/returnees seeking security of tenure.
  6. Draft technical inputs to be used for the development and implementation of context-specific “Housing, Land and Property” (HLP) strategies.
  7. Track and record HLP efforts that link with other relevant humanitarian/development met activities.
  8. Assemble and disseminate lessons learnt and best practices at Cluster level.

  9. Observe humanitarian platforms and events in country and take notes as required.

  10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Educational additional comments

Required Degree Level: Master's degree

Education - Additional Comments:

Master’s degree in Political or Social Sciences, Business Administration, Migration Studies, International Relations, Law or a related field from an accredited academic institution with 3 years of relevant professional experience

A first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant trainings and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;

Experience remark

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in in the field of development and/or the work of international organizations, preferably in fields related to Housing, Land and Property programming including reintegration, resilience, peacebuilding, socioeconomic development, etc.

  • Hands-on experience in design and implementation of projects preferably in Least Developed Countries (LDCs)

  • Good oral and written communications skills and demonstrated research abilities and interest
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e., studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • Internet proficiency as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) required.
