National Focal Point for the “ESCWA Stories” Project in Jordan

Result of Service The individual contractor will ultimately be responsible to provide the following:

- Identification of beneficiary schools in Jordan, with a special focus on rural and marginalized areas, to participate in the ESCWA Stories Initiative. - Field visits to beneficiary schools conducted by a joint team from ESCWA and the national focal point in Jordan. - Successful organization of highlight events related to the ESCWA Stories Initiative in Jordan.

Duties and Responsibilities Background

The ESCWA Stories Team was established by ESCWA’s Executive Secretary to mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among young persons in the Arab region by using the “ESCWA Stories” comic book as an educational tool. The Team visits educational institutions, interacts with students and teachers, and organizes activities and events for the promotion of the comic book and its objectives. The pilot phase of the project was implemented in Lebanon during the academic year 2021-22. This year, the project is expanding in Lebanon, Jordan and Kuwait. Against this background, the ESCWA Stories Team is seeking the services of a designated national focal point to support and facilitate the work of the ESCWA Stories Team in Jordan, through the Jordanian Ministry of Education.

Duties and responsibilities

- Acting as focal point between ESCWA, the Ministry of Education and the designated beneficiary schools in Jordan, in support of the “ESCWA Stories” Initiative. - Facilitating the process of identifying target schools in Jordan to take part in the ESCWA Stories Initiative for the academic year 2022-2023, through UNESCO and ALECSO’s Associated Schools Network in Jordan. - Advising schools and national stakeholders in Jordan on the adoption and implementation of activities related to the SDGs. - Facilitating the flow of information between ESCWA and the designated beneficiary schools in Jordan. - Participating with the ESCWA Stories Team in their field visits to beneficiary schools in Jordan. - Assisting the ESCWA Stories Team in the planning and organization of events relevant to the initiative, including capacity building sessions for teachers, and the “ESCWA Stories Day - Jordan” planned for May 2023. - Exchanging expertise with the ESCWA Stories Team and facilitating cooperation and partnership. - Contributing to the promotion of the SDGs, intergenerational dialogue, good citizenship and global leadership among teachers, staff and students participating in the ESCWA Stories Initiative.

Qualifications/special skills An Bachelor's degree in education, sociology, psychology, social service, international relations, political science or related area is required.

All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. At least 10 years of proven work experience with local governments and international organizations, on projects related to education, science and culture is required. Previous experience working with ministries of education is desirable. Experience working with public and private schools in Jordan is desirable. Previous experience working with the UN is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency Arabic is required. Knowledge of English and French is desirable.

Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
