Overview

Support the SDG Stories initiative by enhancing educational outreach in Jordan.

You have:

• A recognized first level degree in education, sociology, psychology, social service, international relations, political science or a related area is required.
• At least 5 years of proven work experience with schools, NGOs, local governments, and international organizations on projects related to education, science, and culture is required.
• Experience working with public and private schools in Jordan is desirable.
• Fluency in Arabic is required. Knowledge of French and English is desirable.
• Must have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location (Jordan).

Result of Service

The incumbent will be responsible for the following: - Identification of 14 schools in Jordan, with a special focus on rural and marginalized areas, to participate in the SDG Stories Phase IV. - Establishing networks between private and public schools to undertake joint activities and development projects. - Conducting field visits to beneficiary schools conducted by a joint team from ESCWA and the national focal point in Jordan. - Successful organization of highlight events related to the SDG Stories Initiative in Jordan. - Working with many municipalities to mainstream SDGs through training sessions and practical projects. - Establishing partnerships with the civil society and the private sector to support the implementation of the SDG Stories Project.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background: The SDG Stories Team was established by ESCWA’s Executive Secretary to mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among young persons in the Arab region by using the “ESCWA Stories” comic book as an educational tool. The team visits educational institutions, interacts with students and teachers and organizes activities and events for the promotion of the comic book and its objectives. Against this background, the SDG Stories Team is seeking the services of a focal point assistant from UNESCO’s Lebanese National Commission to support and facilitate the work of the ESCWA Stories Team in Jordan. Duties and responsibilities The Focal Point Assistant is expected to provide operational and logistical support to the appointed focal point in Jordan in the following duties: - Acting as focal point between ESCWA, the Jordanian Ministry of Education and the designated beneficiary schools in Jordan, in support of the “SDG Stories” Initiative. - Identifying 14 target schools to take part in the SDG Stories Initiative for the academic year 2024-2025, through UNESCO and ALECSO’s Associated Schools Network in Jordan. - Advising Jordanian schools and national authorities and stakeholders on the adoption and implementation of activities related to the SDGs. - Facilitating the flow of information between ESCWA and the designated beneficiary schools in Jordan. - Participating with the SDG Stories Team in their field visits to beneficiary schools in Jordan. - Assisting the SDG Stories Team in the planning and organization of events relevant to the initiative, including the 4th sub-regional student-led forum on SDGs, capacity building sessions for teachers, and the “SDG Stories Day - Jordan” (date to be determined). - Exchanging expertise with the SDG Stories Team and facilitating cooperation and partnership. - Contributing to the promotion of the SDGs, intergenerational dialogue, good citizenship and global leadership among teachers, staff and students participating in the SDG Stories Initiative.

Qualifications/special skills

A recognized first level degree in education, sociology, psychology, social service, international relations, political science or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. At least 5 years of proven work experience with schools, NGOs, local governments and international organizations, on projects related to education, science and culture is required. Experience working with public and private schools in Jordan is desirable. Experience working with NGOs is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic is required. Knowledge of French and English is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
