Purpose of Activity/Assignment: To develop a child friendly version of the Botswana Children’s Act

Scope of Work

Working under the supervision of the Child Protection Specialist in UNICEF Botswana Country Office and in close consultation with the Department of Social Protection, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. the objective of the consultancy is to develop a child friendly version of the Children’s Act of Botswana of 2009. The act will be used as a tool to increase knowledge of children on the legislation aimed at protecting their rights.

Guiding Principles for the development of the children’s Act are as stipulated below. a) Consideration of the Best Interest of the Child b) Upholding Children’s Rights c) Adopting a Child-friendly Approach d) Protection of Privacy and Confidentiality

Work Assignment Overview:

The consultancy is expected to take 30 working days. Overall, the consultant will be expected to deliver a child friendly version of the children’s act. It will further recommend effective methods to disseminate the act to children across the country. The scope of the assignment will include, reviewing of the current children’s act, consultations with key stakeholders being children to inform the development of a child friendly children’s acts and the submission of the draft and the final child friendly act. Furthermore, they will conduct interviews with key informants from the Department of Social Protection in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and social workers, and UNICEF programme staff.

1. Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant. 2. Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 3. Consultant will be required to complete online courses related to Ethics, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Security related trainings prior to taking up the assignment and/or travel. 4. Consultant will be required to sign the Health Statement for consultants/individual contractor prior to taking up the assignment, and to document that they have appropriate health insurance, including Medical Evacuation

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Social Work, Communication Studies, or related field

Experience

  • At least 2 years’ experience developing content for children is required
  • Fully knowledgeable on the Botswana Children’s Act
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Produce a sample of their recent written work

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. The candidate may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid).
