UNICEF Indonesia is looking qualified consultant to conduct a study on the drivers and impacts of sirri marriage on child brides in two provinces: East Lombok and East Java. The study is expected to provide insights on developing strategies to prevent the sirri marriage practices for child brides from legal and social norms perspectives in Indonesia. It is part of the larger evidence-generation effort under the second phase of “Better Reproductive Health and Rights for All in Indonesia” (BERANI), a UN joint programme.

How can you make a difference?

Under the direction and guidance of Child Protection Specialist, the consultant will be responsible for providing the below activities:

  1. Conduct a comprehensive review of the regulatory framework, literature, studies, and data related to child marriage and sirri marriage in East Java and West Nusa Tenggara provinces.
  2. Develop research methodology for understanding the drivers, impact, and significance of sirri marriage in child marriage practices, bearing in mind the cultural and religious context in the two provinces.
  3. Conduct data collection in quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
  4. Conduct target population and stakeholder mapping that clearly identifies their role and influence.
  5. Develop a study that focuses on the findings, analysis, and recommendations.
  6. Organize and facilitate workshops to disseminate the study results to the government, development partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
  7. Ensure that the research follows the applicable ethical guidance and is conducted in culturally sensitive manners.
  8. Develop policy brief and other user-friendly communication materials.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Indonesian national with a minimum of 8 years of experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative research related to child protection, gender, and harmful practices.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent in Gender Studies, Law, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or any other relevant field of study.
  • Strong networking ability to develop partnerships with the target population and other relevant partners and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills in English and Indonesian.
  • Experience working with UNICEF or other UN agencies is highly valued and will be considered an asset.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
