Background

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has been closely working with the Network of Ethiopian Women’s Association (NEWA) on various initiatives. Most recently NEWA and UN Women came together to implement a project on the ‘Popularization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ that came to an end in December 2019. With the ever-increasing gender-based violence and discrimination against women and girls and the global pandemic of COVID 19 changing the socio-economic dynamics, NEWA in collaboration with UN Women is bringing government actors, civil society representatives, development partners and community representatives together to discuss root causes of inequality ,discrimination against women and the impact of COVID 19 from a gender perspective through regular virtual dialogue platforms. The weekly virtual dialogue platforms discuss on emerging diverse women’s issues that calls for concerted effort of all committed to do away with inequalities and injustice that threatens the lives of women and girls.

Since the first confirmed Corona case in Ethiopia, the government has given due attention to the pandemic and is taking several measures in response. These measures include preventive measures to stop the spreading of the virus that has staying at home at the core, budget allocation earmarked for prevention and protection mechanisms for COVID 19 and building of health facilities and quarantine centers for COVID 19 suspects and patients. The state of emergency act is also part of these protection schemes that the government is putting in place that prohibits public gathering. These commendable measures by the government are also supported by practical measures where government and private organizations are putting in place working from home arrangements. Schools and universities have been closed and transportation and other public services are serving under a restricted environment.

This new way of working is significantly impacting women and men, girls and boys, but on a different level considering the already existing fragile state of wellbeing women and girls experience in Ethiopia. Recent gains on the rights of women and girls may be compromised on issues such as harmful practices violence against women and maternal mortality, and women and girls are threatened to be burdened more with unpaid care work. These and other issues that are arising globally as a result of the pandemic need the coming together of all concerned stakeholders in an effort to tackle and mitigate the impacts of the pandemic. The virtual dialogue platforms serve the purpose of bringing these core women’s rights issues to the forefront to table it on government and other partner’s agenda. The platforms also aim at discussing various measures and COVID 19 responses the government and other stakeholders are undertaking to avoid duplication of efforts.

The virtual meetings have been taking place since June 2020 which has brought together government representatives, CSOs, academia and community representatives. The meetings have been productive and forward looking. However, a major challenge has been documenting the outcomes of the meeting and following-up their proper communication to ensure effective implementation of action plans. The challenge also extends to all other engagements NEWA is undertaking that promotes the right of women and girls in Ethiopia. Therefore, UN Women is seeking to hire a qualified national expert to provide a communication support to NEWA..
