Background

To ensure the media actors will be able to play their gender-responsive role, it is crucial to provide them the necessary knowledge and tools to apply for gender-responsive news/reporting, and how to ensure safety for the journalists, especially female journalists to do their work and to cover the topic of women in the Transitional Processes. With support from the Government of Canada, UN Women South Sudan seeks to engage a consultant to develop and deliver gender-sensitive training for the media actors in South Sudan to advocate for and monitor the participation of women in the implementation of R-ARCSS effectively and actively.

Objectives:

The objective of the consultancy is to create awareness on gender-sensitive reporting/news and empower the capacity of the media in South Sudan so that they will be able to advocate for and monitor effectively and actively on the participation of women in the peace processes. Specific objectives of the consultancy are as follows:

Duties and Responsibilities

SCOPE OF WORK AND SPECIFIC TASKS:

The consultant will work closely with the Programme Officer UN Women to take responsibility for the following tasks:

  • Design the session on gender and media, preparing the contents and training materials. The training should cover gender portray in media contents in South Sudan, the framework of indicators to gauge gender sensitivity in media operations and content, tools/recommendations for the media to advocate for and monitor women participation in the Transitional Processes;
  • Conduct the training on safety for female journalists;
  • Prepare a short report to capture the training results/outcomes, and recommendations to UN Women.

EXPECTED DELIVERABLES:

  • The training materials, and PowerPoint presentations;
  • 3 days training for media actors;
  • Final report of the training.

Required Skills and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Media, Peacebuilding, Social Sciences or related fields, preferably including Gender Studies;
  • A minimum of 10-year relevant working experience in the area of media and gender, peacebuilding, advocacy and monitoring of peace agreements and/or human rights;
  • Experience in providing training for the media sector;
  • Prior experience in working with the UN agencies will be an advantage.
