Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In Kenya, the UN Women Country Programme contributes to the development objectives of Kenya’s blueprint- the Vision 2030, the SDGs particularly, SDG 5 and is aligned to the United Nations Development Assistance Frameworks (UNDAF) 2018-2022 as well as UN Women Global Strategic Plan. The Kenya Country Programme aims to achieve the following results: (i) Increased women’s leadership and participation in governance; (ii) Strengthened women’s economic empowerment; (iii) Increased protection of women against gender-based violence & access to justice for women; and (iv) Strengthened women’s leadership in peace building and humanitarian response.

The Women, Peace and Security (WPS), programme in Kenya Country Office is conceived and anchored within the framework of the current country Strategic Note (2019-2022) and in line with UN Development Assistance Frameworks (2018-2022) and Kenya Vision 2030. UN Women supports the government to implement its Second-Generation National Action Plan for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security (UNSCR 1325), including localization, and to achieve targets of SDG 5 and 16. The programme embodies the “Leave No One Behind” principle, by ensuring the inclusion of women, youth and other marginalized groups in peace and security initiatives.

Contributing to the implementation of Kenya’s second National Action Plan (KNAP) on UNSCR 1325, the UN in Kenya is supporting the establishment of a National Mediation Team and a Women Mediation Network. The aim of the network is to strengthen women’s active and meaningful participation in conflict prevention and mediation efforts in Kenya. It will seek to provide a platform for strategic engagement, advocacy, capacity development and collaboration/networking aimed at implementing commitments in KNAP II.

Reporting to the Peace and Security Specialist at UN Women and the UN’s Peace and Development Advisor in the Resident Coordinator’s Office, the Communications and Knowledge Management Officer will support knowledge management and communication activities to increase the standing and awareness of mediation efforts in Kenya with partners, the media, and the public.

Responsible for the production of the knowledge products and the visibility of these products:

  • Prepare press releases, articles, key messages, and other advocacy materials.
  • Identify stories and develop/review content for the mediation project www.genderinkenya.org website, UN in Kenya website and UN Women and UN in Kenya corporate social media accounts.
  • Provide inputs to integrate advocacy and communication strategies in relation to the mediation project.
  • Draft talking points, speeches, Opeds for mediation team
  • Publish OPEDs on behalf of the team and other actors.
  • Take notes at meetings and prepare reports
  • Establish and maintain online platforms, compiling the relevant resources, publications, briefs, press clippings, reports and photos.
  • Produce social media packages including social media posts, maintain social media accounts, disseminate publications, events and news and ensure consistency in branding and visibility.
  • Track and monitor print and social media and report relevant information to colleagues to inform strategy and prioritization.
  • Support to advocacy efforts by organizing roundtable discussions, press conferences, online events, and other publicity events, and preparing briefing materials and press releases
  • Research, compile and produce reports on web statistics on a regular basis and electronic surveys.
  • Contribute to the identification of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Establish and maintain linkages with relevant UN agency communications focal points
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations or Journalism or related field is required
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible work experience on communications and knowledge management-related work at the local or international level.
  • Expertise in designing effective advocacy, communication and knowledge products and platforms required.
  • Proven experience in drafting, editing and proofreading material, communicating with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Experience in handling corporate social media accounts on Twitter, linked In, Facebook and Youtube.
  • Experience in publishing opeds is preferable.
  • Experience in the usage of software packages (Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc) and handling of web-based management systems.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of Kiswahili desirable.
