Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In China, UN Women provides technical and financial assistance to innovative programmes and strategies for gender equality and women's empowerment. Economic Empowerment is one of key thematic areas that UN Women China team has been focusing on.

In March 2019, UN Women in partnership with the European Union launched the regional programme “Promoting Economic Empowerment of Women at Work in Asia – WeEmpower Asia” (WEA, 2019-2022), to contribute to the economic empowerment of women, recognizing them as beneficiaries and partners of growth and development, by increasing commitment of private companies to gender equality and women´s empowerment and strengthening companies’ capacities to implement these commitments. China is one of seven countries of implementing the WEA programme in the region.

One of the key components of the WEA Programme is to encourage private sector companies to sign and implement Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), an initiative between UN Women and UN Global Compact to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community. As of May 2021, 254 companies have committed to promoting gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community by signing the WEPs in mainland China.

The UN Women Asia-Pacific WEPs Awards was launched in 2020, hosted by WEA and presenting a unique opportunity for individuals and companies to get recognized and make their efforts to advance gender equality visible amongst their customers, employees and partners and inspire others to take action. Building on the success of the 1st WEPs awards, the 2021 WEPs awards application will be open on 31 May.

Based on the results achieved under WEA and other projects in WEPs promotion, UN Women China plans to officially launch the WEPs Network in China by the end of 2021, with the function of enhancing knowledge sharing, capacity development, experience exchange, good practice recognition, etc.
