Result of Service Provides reliable, professional and high quality programme and project support and administrative assistance to programme and project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and provide effective support to day-to-day office operations. Processes work and requisite follow-up accomplished under some supervision, seeks advice from and/or reporting to supervisor as needed. Accurately prepares reports. Consistently applies appropriate policies, guidelines and procedures. Effectively and in a timely manner, liaises and interacts with colleagues and concerned parties internally and externally. Interprets and translates accurately from Somali to English and vice versa.

Work Location Mogadishu, Somalia with travel to Somaliland

Expected duration 1 April - 30 September 2022 53 working days

Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Head of Transnational Organized Crime, Illicit Trafficking and Terrorism Programmes based in Nairobi and Head of UNODC Programme Office in Somalia based in Mogadishu, under the direct supervision of the Associate Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Office (BMM Country Coordinator for Somalia) based in Mogadishu, and in close consultation with the UNODC BMM programme team, the consultant will:

  • Provide high quality programme and project support to programme and project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation

  • Translate documents from Somali to English and vice versa;

  • Interpret meetings and events from Somali to English and vice versa;

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in language studies, development studies or related disciplines is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: A minimum of one year of work experience in programme or project administration, technical cooperation or related areas is required. Experience with organizing activities is required. Experience in translating documents and interpreting from Somali to English and vice versa is required. Experience of working with the United Nations desirable. Demonstrated knowledge of countering TIP and SOM is desirable.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in oral and written English and Somali is required. Knowledge of any other official United Nations language is an advantage.

Skills: Excellent organizational skills are required. Excellent computer skills in Word and Power Point presentation are required. Excellent communication and drafting skills in English and Somali is required. Knowledge of Somali institutional, cultural and political matters is required.
