UNICEF MALAWI, as a UN Agency, pays VAT for goods and services in line with current rules and regulations on VAT relating to UN Agencies. In this regard, Malawi Country Office pays VAT on all its payments for goods and services and seeks reimbursement from the authorized tax institution, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

VAT Claims on all goods / services paid for within a given quarter are compiled and submitted on to MRA after getting approving and endorsement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On a quarterly basis, the office has about 500 to 800 invoices to retrieve from finance records and compile the claim data for submission to MRA.

How can you make a difference?

The Consultant will undertake the following activities:

  • Retrieval of all payment vouchers (paid within a given quarter in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024) with VAT invoices from the filing records in Business Support Centre (BSC).
  • Chronological refiling of all the retrieved payment vouchers with VAT invoices to enhance the timely review and validation by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).
  • Accurate data entry of the individual finance documents on the VAT claim template as required by MRA.
  • Re-filing of all the retrieved payment vouchers into their original filing records after they are brought back from MRA.
  • Any other finance support duty as assigned by the Operations Manager

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Completion of secondary education is required, preferably supplemented by related field of work in Business Administration, Management, Finance, Accounting or any other relevant field of discipline plus five years’ very relevant work experience in Accounting.

    **For this position, a bachelor’s degree from a recognized academic institution in Business Administration, Management, Finance, Accounting or other relevant field may replace three years of related work experience. A master’s degree may replace additional two years.

Work experience

  • Experience in relevant finance or accounting work is required.
  • Practical work experience in VAT management is highly desirable.
  • Practical work experience in finance or accounting management is highly desirable.
  • Work experience with United Nations (UN) is an asset.

Technical skills and Competencies:

  • Experience in utilizing computers, including word processing, spreadsheet.
  • Organizational, planning, and prioritizing skills and abilities is required.
  • Presentation skills is a strong asset.
  • Good judgement, initiative, high sense of responsibility and confidentiality is required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with people of different national and cultural background to achieve common goals and to provide guidance to more junior support staff is required.

Languages: Fluency in English, both strong verbal and written skills, are essential.

Remarks:

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and advance to the next stage of the selection process.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
